Giving EBM from a cup at 5mths?

My son has been EBF, apart from 2 days of feeding him expressed milk via a feeding cup (v messy) and a bottle (he seemed to take to it ok) at around 2 weeks old. He's never had a bottle since.

We'd like to try giving him EBF via some kind of cup - a bf support worker recommended a Doidy cup, but is there much benefit to that over a freeflow trainer cup with a lid? Does anyone have any successful experience of trying to feed via a cup at this age?!

I never had success with my tinies using a cup, but I guess it depends how much you want to "supervise"

Keeping an eye on this, my 4mo will not take a bottle so hoping to go straight to a cup. No experience as my eldest took 1 bottle a day then went straight to a straw just before she was one.

I'm interested too. DS who is 21 weeks doesn't take bottle and I am finding it really stressful/ trapping. Don't know whether to try with cup or bottle. Finding it really hard to sterilize everything, then try express with DD (2 yrs) charging around. Then try coax DS to have some then end up chucking most of it away.

DH has been trying tommee tippee cup. But today I went out for a bike ride and came back to find he had been crying a while. DH was really stressed out and I felt awful. I wasn't out any longer than last week when he was fine. Trying to resist weaning too early though feel it might take the pressure off (and he sits well in high chair).

I always preferred bottles to cups as there was much less spillage - it's heart breaking seeing your expressed milk getting spilt or dribbled away!

Woodifer · 18/01/2014 19:40

Ooh just seen a thread about straws - another thing to try?

Laquila · 18/01/2014 19:44

Thanks all. Woodifer I know exactly what you mean but I really don't think that really weaning is the way forward for us - I'm not really expecting my baby to actually consume much when we start BLW so his main meals will still very much be breast milk. My mum and aunties keep dropping the words "baby rice" into every possible conversation but I'm ignoring them!

I know it's easy for me to say, but there's really no need to worry if your baby gets a bit upset whilst you're away and he gets hungry - if he's anything like mine, he's a long way from actually getting properly hungry - move has plenty of fat reserves! ;)

Both mine drank quite well from a doidy at that age.

I introduced cups with both my girls (ebf) at about 4 months, dd1 preferred the doidy cup and dd2 prefers a bog standard free flow cup with a lid. Both girls could use their cups really well by 6 months but it is really messy when they are learning. I will warm you though that even when they took ebm from the cup they would always want the boob after if possible due to the comfort part of it. I think it's all just trial and error x

Just searched on YouTube for "doidy cup 5 months" some nice clips.

Tried DS with nuk bottle today (2 oz)

Got about 1 1/2 down (or spilt!) - last little bit he sipped from a shot glass. So may give doidy cup another go.

Woodifer · 19/01/2014 14:15

Should add that he never got a proper suck on with the bottle, but neither did he mind and seemed happy playing with it in his mouth and swallowing/dribbling milk.

We started bottle refusenik DS2 with a Doidy at about 4.5 months (I just happened to have one from DS1 and figured it was worth a try) - he seemed to get the hang of it straight away and then very easily moved to a soft spout sippy (Nuk). I think the Doidy is good for wee babies because you don't have to tilt it very much and they can kind of see what's happening.

tried with doidy today - mainly blew bubbles but drank a bit. maybe not hungry enough (my total lack of routine isn't helping!!)
