I'm on my 5th dc now and confused to these new guidelines, and how they actually work in practice for your baby?

I find the guidelines okay in theory & doable to a certain extent and of course i don't want to make my baby ill, but i find boiling the kettle, waiting 30 minutes & then having to cool it down very time consuming & by the time i have done this my 1wk old is either so frustrated she swallows too much air or has gone to sleep in absolute frustration at having had to wait.

At the moment her feeding shedule is pretty sporadic so i can't second guess when to boil the kettle and i'm also struggling to get out the house with all the fathing about. I cannot afford to buy premade and most of the 9oz premade would not be drunk as she is only on 2oz!

Is is safe to do it the old way (ie fridge) , a few bottles to be used within 12 hrs, but using the same 30 min technique to kill salmonella? And flash cooling then putting in the fridge to be warmed up when required?

And then taking a cool bag out and a flask to warm bottles?

That's what I have been doing. I think if this is the method you have used for your first 4 DC then stick to what works. As you say these new guidelines aren't the most practical when trying to demand feed a newborn. They are slightly easier to follow when you have an older baby who is in a routine.

Thankyou mumbai, with 4 other dc it also makes the wait even longer as i'm always so busy so will do it that way x

My method was to have sterile chilled bottles with no teat and half the required water in in the fridge, make up feed in seperate bottle with half the water (very hot) and all the powder, shake, then add the chilled fridge water. Takes a few minutes and is the perfect temperature straight away. Sounds a lot more complex than it is!

Well it's around £80 I know it sounds expensive but it was such a life saver! My ds was fed on demand at the beginning and had no real routine and he most definitely would not wait for his bottle to warm up or cool down, especially at 2am!
My dh thought it was unnecessary at the start but now agrees it has saved us so much time and hassle
We got ours from toys r us, think amazon have them too - and you can use any brand/size bottle!

Mothercare also sell that prep machine, saw it in Stevenage store, I didn't realise formula was so complicated!
