Not available on line unfortunately (they need the money from subscriptions) but there is an edited version of the article that recently appeared in 'The Ecologist'

(Pat Thomas uncovers a world where predatory baby milk manufacturers, negligent health professionals and an ignorant unsympathetic public all conspire to keep baby off the breast and on the bottle.')

This quote (my bold) really got me..

'Breastmilk is a 'live' food that contains living cells, hormones, active enzymes, antibodie and at least 400 other unique components.
It is a dynamic substance, the composition of which changes form the beginning to the end of the feed and according to the age and needs of a baby.

Because it also provides active immunity, every time a baby breastfeeds,it alo receives protection from disease. Compared to this miraculous substance, the artificial milk sold as infant formula is little more the junk food

It is also the only manufactured food that humans are encouraged to consume exclusively for a period of months, even though we know that no human body can expect to stay healthy and thrive on a steady diet of processed food. '

moondog · 27/07/2006 18:01

QofQ,if I didn't like you so much,I would be very rude indeed......

no genuinely I didn't! I know that you're one of the people who've I've debated against on MANY occasions and thought you thought I was just PITA!

moondog · 27/07/2006 19:12

QoQ,I don't hold it against people if their opinions differ from mine!
How boring would that be?

It's took me ages to read that article - but it was so worth it. Doesn't it make you feel angry? I'm sooo glad I'm still bf dd2 - but feel full of regret that I gave up at 10 weeks with dd1 - and feel I've ballsed (sp) her future health. and

moondog · 27/07/2006 20:18

Hotmama, yes it does inspire anger doesn't it??
Women are being quite literally fucked over.

I can now see why some posters hate Nestle - the fuckers! How surprising that the US didn't initially join up.

So what can an individual do - any info/links on any pressure groups etc?

moondog · 27/07/2006 20:23

Baby Milk Action is a good place to start.
Or,become a peer supporter or breastfeeding counsellor with ABM.
Hang on,I'll do you some links in a bit but think dh has urgent business on 'puter.

Ta-I'll have a look.

I go to La Leche meetings- and they have been stars in helping me continue to exc bf dd2 who is now 24 weeks. As I posted I gave up with dd1 at 10 weeks - who was mixed fed from the beginning for a whole variety of reasons.

Now that I am an 'avid' breastfeeder - I feel like being a bit more militant - and tell everyone how fab it is!

CorrieDale · 27/07/2006 20:47

And join the boycott! All the bastards understand is money.

JennT · 27/07/2006 20:56

You're a MILITANT LACTIVIST hotmama

hotmama · 27/07/2006 20:58

I feel like Wolfie Smith!

JennT · 27/07/2006 21:09

I've been going to bfn meetings. DD is 27weeks but felt pressure from other mums to add formula at night to 'get baby to sleep through'. I'm so glad I didn't.

hotmama · 27/07/2006 21:29

My bf dd2 is happily sleeping - hopefully until about 6ish tomorrow!

moondog · 28/07/2006 08:49

Vive la Revolution eh Hotmama!?

You seen this HM????

OP posts:
Callisto · 28/07/2006 12:02

Great article - I shall be printing it off and sending a copy to my local baby clinic. They are pretty pro-bfing already, but this should get a wider audience. We should all email it to the BBC after that ridiculous headline 'Baby dies after breastfeed'.

hotmama · 28/07/2006 16:37

Moondog - thanks for the links. I tried to join Baby Milk Action online - but couldn't so have asked for the pack etc.

Thanks
