Hi my dd is 5 and a half weeks and last night was really bad, she sounded like she couldn't breathe and was choking and sounded like she was gonna be sick. She had a couple of half hearted feeds during the night but refused a full feed. She's still snuffly and making choking sound today. She had another half hearted feed at 12 which she threw up over me and she is now asleep, and my boobs are getting full.
So do I keep feeding as much as she will take and hope my supply isn't affected or should I offer it more? I'm just worried that she's not getting enough especially as she's obviously not right. I've got an appointment at the docs at 2.10 so I can get her checked over but worried about my boobs and her food supply! What should I do?
Thanks

Sorry meant to say will my supply be ok for a day or so until she's better or will it be affected if she's not asking as much as normal?

if she isn't eating a full feed try and pump to keep the supply up, also try to keep her elevated, i used to put books under the cot to keep it slanted and put some vicks in a bow of hot water to help steam up the room.

muppetthecow · 14/01/2014 13:40

I'd second trying to pump if you're feeling engorged.

Don't use Vicks until she's 3 months though, even just for steam, as it can burn a baby's nostrils when they breathe in the steam. Steam by itself will be really helpful though!

Try not to worry too much - difficult I know.
I really don't think your supply will be affected too much so quickly (but I'm no expert) but I would keep offering just to keep her fluids up.
Poor thing - hope it goes well at doctor.

Oh if she's snotty, get one of those snot suckers. It's very satisfying and helps them breathe.

TinyTear · 14/01/2014 13:45

yes to snot sucker she may scream the house down but finally at 23 months my daughter sees the point of them...

PoopMaster · 14/01/2014 13:46

Definitely try and pump or hand express if you feel like your breasts are getting uncomfortable, you don't want a sick baby and a blocked duct.

I also use books to elevate the cot, or if I can just snuggle with them on my shoulder (bonus of being upright and getting a hug from you).

Thanks for the replies. Will try not to worry too much. I do t have a pump as couldn't express at all when I was feeding ds so didn't bother to buy one. Will try to get one today if I can. And a snot sucker. Though I can't see snot up her nose? It's more like its in her throat. She's just woken going to give her a cuddle and get ready to go to docs.

Don't spend too much on a pump in that case, i actually sold an expensive medela electric as the Philips Avent Natural manual work the best for me...

Until then hand express...

QuietNinjaTardis · 14/01/2014 14:39

She checked out ok at docs. No temp, chest ok, pulse and oxygen ok so the doc said it might be a mucus plug she's trying to clear or the start of a cold and to bring her back if I'm worried at all but hopefully she'll be fine. She had a feed when we were there and just gonna see if she'll have a bit more.

Ok am bumping as she definitely has a bit of a cold I think. Very snuffly and still trying to clear her throat. Very dribbly as well. She is not eating properly. She's not emptying a boob no matter how much I get her to wake and try again and they are getting uncomfortably full. I can't get a pump until tomoro at the earliest. How long until my supply drops to meet her non demands? Have I got a couple of days or not? I'm a little bit worried. If my supply does drop then when she's better and feeding properly again will it go back up? Sorry for all the questions but I really want to get breast feeding right this time so don't want it to go wrong.

can you hand express? she might be finding it difficult to latch on if you're really full. it'll help you to by taking off some of the fullness and keeping supply up. if you express into a sterile cup you can always try to cup feed her. i would offer her a feed as often as possible. it's horrible when they're ill, even if it is just a cold.

GreenFirefly · 15/01/2014 13:55

there'll be info on kellymom about hand expressing if you've never done it before. I can't get anything with a pump but loads by hand.

PoopMaster · 15/01/2014 13:58

Hi OP - firstly don't worry too much about supply, with good help people have been able to breastfeed after stopping for ages so a few bad days won't mean the end for you. The main issue is making sure the baby is getting enough fluids (is she having small feeds more often? She might be thirsty but not hungry iyswim?) and making sure you do keep removing milk from your breasts.

You need to make sure you're looking after yourself too which means not getting milk blockages - if you can look up hand expressing eg on YouTube/google, then get into a warm shower/bath and get massaging. Once you get the hang of it you'll be able to express quite a lot manually, you could then try and get some into a cup and see if cup-feeding is an option while they're bunged up? Also make sure you get a rest too if you can (though again women breastfeed in wartorn countries so don't worry too much about the stress of a poorly baby affecting your supply)

Good luck - it's really rubbish when babies are poorly :(

QuietNinjaTardis · 15/01/2014 14:11

Thank you will try hand expressing if I can. Fingers crossed this wont last long. She does latch properly but is just not interested in feeding if she's not hungry. She's tired now so will see if she will sleep for a bit then try again.
