Bottle Teats - help!!

MummyWolf79 · 11/01/2014 10:24

Hi all,

DS is 3 weeks old, I am feeding him with formula and expressed breast milk as he wont latch on to me. When feeding, he seems to take too much milk from the bottle then spits it out through the side of his mouth with the teat is still in. He's only started to do this over the last week or so but I can't understand why, as I haven't changed anything. Midwife has suggested using longer teats, as it may not be getting to the back of his mouth, I've tried Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature vented slow flow teats, and Philips Avent new born/slow flow teats can anyone suggest any others which are a bit longer? Or any other ideas on how to resolve this?

I'm not sure about the rest of the issue, but I think one teat people have said is long is the Medela Calma.

I should add that I'm not sure if the Calma teat works with bottles other than Medela, as I've only used it with them. It certainly does not look like it would work with a wide neck bottle. I'm not sure if it works with other brands of standard neck bottle.

I have a veritable library of bottles thanks to my bottle-refuser. Medela Calma are much longer than any others and possibly worth a try. They are expensive (about £15) so it is worth asking your friends if anyone has one which came with a Medela pump.

Thanks for your suggestions. At the end of my tether!!! I'm sure this is the root of all our problems, DS doesnt settle at all and you can actually hear his digestive system processing the milk. Plus he doesn't get any wind up which makes his extra grouchy!!!

I have been using the Calma teats with EBM, but they are not recommended to be used with formula - I read somewhere that formula is thicker than breast milk and it wrecks the valves in the Calma teat.

Mam teats worked with several bottle refuses a over my friends.

Oh, and they work on Avent bottles.

Has he been checked for a tongue tie, this sounds just like dd1, and also wasn't spotted until 3 ish weeks by midwives, by which point she also had thrush.
Just a thought.

No been checked for tongue tie, not heard of that?

Ask you MW but they will probably have checked for tongue tie- little piece of skin under his tongue "tying" the tongue to the bottom of baby's mouth- but you never know. I've just bought some mothercares own bottles- innocent they're called and they look more boob shaped and DS actually has to suck rather than it just pouring in. I've had same problem-I'm mix feeding and wanted something slow flowing as i'm trying to wean him off so wanted him to have to "try"!
