Worlds Most Pukey Baby

Advice, insights and end in sight stories needed.

Nearly eight week old boy who is ebf is very Pukey. Sometimes it is like an entire feed comes back up. Sometimes curds, sometimes milk like it has just gone in, sometimes watery. Seems to be no pattern as to when it happens.

He isn't distressed by it unless it is forceful and comes out of his nose, but this has only happened three or four times.

Sometimes he does this silent gag things with no puke.

He is a generally happy baby, putting on weight and sleeping well. HV and GP have both said don't worry. But he is always in a bib, always changing clothes and the others mums I know say their babies have only been sick a few times. He is sick at least a couple of times every couple of hours.

Help! Or just relax?

TIA

Hi Broody, I could have written this post myself! My DD was sick I would say everyday since birth, I took her to the doctors constantly insisting she had silent reflux but because she was happy and putting on weight the doctors were reluctant to do anything, one gave gaviscon to thicken up for formula to keep it down (she was mix fed till 2 months then ff) but this just gave her chronic constipation, they all told me not to worry and she would grow out of it. Finally at 6 months she has! We can leave the house without a million bibs and people can hold her without fear!

I would take him to the doctors (for reassurance if nothing else) but then relax and just bulk buy bibs, it will pass. Grin

Oh also if it helps, we tried every type of milk going, breast and all brands powder and ready made, just to see if this made a difference. The only thing I found was that my DD had an amazing ability to separate the powder from the water and sick them back up in two separate quantities (normally in a baby classBlush) so we stuck to breast and ready made.

Thank you! Good to know it gets better

Apparently I was like this as I baby. I was ebf and my mother had to give near every feed twice. I soon grew out of it.

Exactly the same here. LO is 11 weeks now and I just realised today that for the last week or so, he hasn't been half as sicky. There was a pretty epic under my top, pool of sick in my bra this morning.

We have his moses basket elevated and keep a muslin cloth under his head- quicker to change than sheet and absorbant. Be careful of redness in neck folds, bit of sudocreme cleared it up.

I never went to doctor, or tried him on formula because he didn't seem to be in any discomfort with it.

But I think things are improving slightly. Good luck

No, sorry, I have the worlds most pukey baby. Or did. For the first 6mnths or so it was a pretty constant vomathon. Over himself, over me, over floors, sofas, friends, relatives, pets, cars, restaurants...you name it. I was so used to being covered in sick I adopted a sort of weird brazen it out policy, just battling on in vomity clothes, apologising for the smell/sight of me for as long I could each day before giving in and getting changed. I actually had to buy a tumble dryer because I literally ran out of clothes that fitted

Honestly, though, I got really worried about 6wks in. He's DC2 and it was so unlike DS1, I couldn't believe he could be so sick and still be ok. HVs kept telling me as long as he put on weight...well, yes, obviously, but it just didn't seem right. And the logistics of it were so exhausting

Anyway, now we're through Christmas and he's 6mnths and he's somehow mysteriously stopped doing it without me even noticing. He's whopping. And very happy.

So alls well that ends well. Apart for the cost of washing. Grit your teeth, OP, and fret not.

Mine was like this too, but Gaviscon did help us. If you haven't already it might be worth speaking to your doctor about reflux as that's what it was with mine. A few things:

  • try to keep him upright as much as possible
  • no waistbands, so onesies or dungarees
  • have muslins stashed everywhere!
  • get a cheap throw for your sofa
  • a dummy might help
