Can you buy colief off the shelf?!

Have never posted here before, but really need some help. Am struggling with almost six week old(dc3). Showing symptoms of colic (I realise this is an umbrella term) have tried Infacol and gripe water over the last few weeks but with no joy, have been giving gaviscon as prescribed by GP for last 2 days as HV thought it may be a silent reflux issue(I think she matches the colic symptoms more). Still no change....so back to my original question, colief has been mentioned a few times to me, friends/school yard mums/HV and as I head in to my sixth week with dd constantly attached to me in obvious discomfort if she's not feeding or dozing, was considering a jaunt to the 24 hour tesco, but their pharmacy isn't 24 hour, can you buy it off the shelf or is it over the counter from the pharmacy?!! Thanks in advance and apologies if I'm being a bit daft, never experienced sleep deprivation/tugging of heart strings/hormones like this!!

You used to be able to. I'm pretty sure I just got some off the shelf in the baby medicine section for dc2. That was 2 years ago now.

Colief - yes i bought it off the shelf, but colief is to do with lactose intolerance so may not be of any use to you.

But i did the infacol, gripe water and colief along with keeping LO propped up for 20 minutes after feeds and winding for up to 20 minutes until she burped. Tell me - does your LO's stools look like peanut butter or are they runny? (if it's the latter then i think you should be asking your gp / hv to prescribe a special milk)

Back to silent reflux - gaviscon is the (crap diet coke like) first line of defence for GP's - i suspect a consultant paed would have gone straight to ranitidine.

So i would suggest that you go back to your gp and tell them gaviscon hasn't helped and ask them to come up with something else.

Check out the little refluxers forum :-)

Thanks for your replies, thankfully she's just nodded off on my shoulder after some serious bouncing and patting! She usually has runny poos but she's ebf, have gone a little peanut butter like after the gaviscon though. Tbh she spends most of her awake time upright as doesn't tolerate much more than a nappy change on her back. Thanks for the heads up about the little refluxers forum, will hunt it out now. Think I'll try and get some z's while she's asleep on me and see GP tomorrow rather than walk to tesco with the hope that colief might do the trick now knowing what it's for!!

Yes, I got mine off the shelf at Boots. I think it is slightly cheaper on Amazon (if it works for you might want to stock up from there).

Good luck with it. Didn't get great results for me, but transformed my nephew practically overnight so fingers crossed.

Yes you can to colief.

My LO was given lansaparzole for silent reflux, and it took two weeks to see the difference, but it was a massive difference, like a different baby altogether.

This must be a very difficult time for you, sending virtual hugs (( )) Smile

Boots, its about £12.

Add a few drops to FF or BF milk, it worked for my DD.

It breaks down the lactose, so not as painful. I wish I had got it straight away instead of trying other stuff Sad

LamaDrama · 09/01/2014 22:57

GP wouldnt let me have it on prescription ( due to cost) unless they could prove baby was lactose intolerant & they were unwilling to test DD as they said it was colic.

So I just bought it, used it for about 10 days.

Try drinking fennel team was advised by my German friend and thank God it's worked like a charm. DS now 8 weeks and no problems at all.

hazchem · 10/01/2014 10:39

not sure if this is helpful for you but I've recently read that probitoics can be helpful for colic blog with links to research about it

givemeaclue · 10/01/2014 10:41

Yes but it is £10 for 7 ml so better to get on prescription
