Hi all. DD is 9 weeks and EBF. Some evenings she fusses on the breast, bobbing on and off, thrashing about, legs kicking etc. I initially thought wind and then I thought maybe the milk wasn't coming quick enough... Anyway it is now happening daytime too ( not all feeds ) especially when she is overtired. Just now I took her off as I thought perhaps it's because she has emptied the one side. But a small squeeze sent the milk squirting out so it's not that either.

It is becoming a little upsetting as she is getting very distressed and at these moments I want to not bf anymore. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm so frustrated not knowing why she does this.

Thank you

My 12 week old EBF DD does this too. I think it's reflux with her, but so far none of the medications have helped.

It's distressing and frustrating isn't it? I often feel I'm only one feed away from giving up which I really don't want to do having made it this far.

My dd used to do something similar if she wanted to use me for a dummy rather than a feed, could it be that?

Probably wind...sit her up mid feed and wait for her to have a burp, then try again.

It is infuriating but it will pass soon enough.

My baby does this. It's usually due to wind.

Mine does this too. Sometimes he's too distracted, and feeding in a quiet place helps, and often it's wind and he needs a good burp. Sometimes, bizarrely, he won't latch on while I'm sitting but if I walk around he'll latch on while I'm walking and then I can sit down.

Mine did this when she needed to poo. After she could feed no problem. Just like with wind, you could do nappy change and press the legs up a little to help.

DD is 11 weeks and does this when she needs to burp, needs to poo, or needs to sleep. I tend to take her off the breast and put her over my shoulder instead. She wants the comfort but not the milk, which often ends up all over both of us.

my 3 week old has started doing this too, I couldn't work out what was wrong. I also thought maybe she wasn't getting the milk even though she was latched on well and I could easily squeeze milk out. Fussing at the breast can also be a sign of oral thrush in baby which is what im going to rule out with MW as I have other symptoms too.

Hi, a little controversial but check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elimination_communication and look at the Signals section. My dd really did this if she needed a wee or a poo, popping on and off the boob and squirming. Not every feed and mostly she was happy to go in a nappy, but if she behaved like this I'd take her nappy off, she'd pee or poo and finish the feed happily. If you don't have a potty just hold baby upright with knees up over the nappy. You don't have to decide to do EC but its worth a try occasionally to settle a fussy baby if nothing else is working!
