Tongue tie- bf pain and baby screaming when latching- anyone similar problem?

I've got an appointment at a tongue tie clinic on Weds after a midwife looked at my son (he's currently a week old)- his tongue is in a heart shape at the front with that bit of skin attached from the bottom -it looks like tongue tie. I'm hoping they'll snip it, in the meantime I'm having major problems latching him. Does anyone else have/had this problem? He screams and screams and arches his back when I try and latch him tho once he's on he does manage to feed ok (tho my nipples are constantly sore) he also clamps down a lot which causes me a lot of pain.

I'm hoping that if anyone else has had a similar problem you can reassure me that these problems will clear up once he's snipped?

anyone have any tips for easier/less stressful latching?

Google exaggerated latch and the flipple, both can be helpful when dealing with tongue tied babies. Biological nurturing can also help.

Snipping is not always a quick fix. What you describe sounds like an anterior tie, however you need to be aware that sometimes with an anterior tie, there can also be a posterior tie which is harder to spot or a lip tie.

is how to examine for posterior ties, there's no sound on the video btw.

Ask to join the tongue tie babies support group on facebook and you will find lots of experience and knowledge on there!

That sounds like my DS before his tongue tie was clipped, it was heartbreaking, but as soon as the tongue tie was clipped he's fed no problems. He still does clamp down a bit at first but it's only for a few seconds.

He couldn't really feed before then so I expressed and he got it in a bottle but I managed to a couple of times with us lying down on our sides in bed. Good luck!

Like mawbroon mentioned the flipper latch worked for me (although until now I had no idea it had an actual name!) I would pinch the top and bottom of my boob together whilst DS tried to latch on. Think it helped him get more boob in his mouth and so a better latch. It still wasn't great but we persevered for the 8 weeks it took to get his TT snipped.

When you go to the tongue tie clinic don't play down how uncomfortable you are when feeding. I did that initially and as DS was feeding well in terms of weight gain they were reluctant to snip it. I honestly don't think I'd still be breastfeeding 18 months later if it hadn't been done.

My tongue tie babies used to latch on ok from the side, with their bodies going behind me; I think the midwife called it a rugby ball position Confused. It hurts a bit but is bearable and makes bf possible. I hope all goes ok for you, op.
