EBF baby- jet of poo, normal?

Not sure of a more elegant way to put it than that! My 4 week old son just did a poo mid nappy change and honestly it was like someone unleashed a high power water jet, it shot out and went all over my trousers and a good metre plus over the floor.

His poo is yellow, and from what I read, normal in appearance. He has a few soiled nappies each day, maybe 3. He feeds, settles and sleeps well and is growing etc.

But I am a bit shocked by the force with which it came out, is that normal? I think he often has such sudden, powerful poos- some have made me jump mid feed etc...

Am I being an OTT first time mum?

Sounds normal from what I can remember!

Never had a mid-change poo, but I remember people occasionally saying "oh, has he got a dirty nappy? Does he need changing?" And replying "oh no, you'll know about it when he does" shortly followed by a massive rumbling explosion in his nappy!

gamerchick · 04/01/2014 17:15

Yep.. middle son shot me in the chest once with the rest hitting the wall behind me. The ex thought it was hilarious. He did just seem to explode rather than a nice gentle poop.

Normal!

Teladi · 04/01/2014 17:18

Totally normal. My DD did this when she was about 4 days old. My husband shouted out in surprise and I ran up the stairs, which was not an easy task when still bleeding and recently stitched, thinking he had dropped her!

I remember ds spray painting a wall this way once. totally normal!

AnythingNotEverything · 04/01/2014 17:20

Totally normal. We've had poo that has defied gravity, spraying in such a way that it landed in a wall behind her head.

Just another thing they don't tell you about breastfeeding!

Shesparkles · 04/01/2014 17:21

Absolutely!

Featherbag · 04/01/2014 17:22

Normal! You get faster at catching it over time.

Spottybra · 04/01/2014 17:23

My ds used to get it over the wall, carpet, radiator and himself.

I never quite new whether the clean my new carpet or ds first!

RubyGoat · 04/01/2014 17:28

Normal! Next time, don't remove soiled nappy from under the bum till you've got the next one ready to put in place. Hold the front of nappy up in front of the bum for as long as possible, if its just wet, to prevent poo jets.

We regularly used to get through 12-15 nappies per day, as DD invariably chose nappy change time to poo. Sometimes more than once, hence many wasted nappies.

Imnotbeverley · 04/01/2014 17:29

Glad it's normal! It was bloody hilarious, DP and I shouting at each other to do something, crying with laughter and me with a massive jet of crap dribbling down my leg...

Normal! I had a face full when I made the fatal error to go close in order to check her sleep suit was not wet! She got me good and proper! Just relieved my mouth was closed at the time!

RubyGoat · 04/01/2014 18:09

Haha. Yes, I remember the exploding nappy noise. DH & I were in a waiting room full of people, with 6 week old DD when she did this. Very noisy, accompanied by a satisfied little groan. I literally shut my eyes & put my hands over my face. Everyone in the room just fell about... Blush

Sid77 · 04/01/2014 18:19

Normal! My DS1 pebble dashed my DP mid nappy change at a few weeks old. It was accompanied by a massive noise, so loud that I heard it from downstairs when they were in the bedroom. Hilarious for me, DP was less impressed...

IShallCallYouSquishy · 04/01/2014 18:28

We could use 3 nappies per nappy change sometimes. Poo would start streaming out and would be holding a nappy against her to stop it going everywhere. Get a fresh one on then boom here comes more!

Aaaah, those were the days! Fortunately never got pebble dashed or over floors furniture. Several leaks onto my trousers/tops though!

QuietNinjaTardis · 04/01/2014 18:31

Aldi nappies £1.69 for the size 1 newborn. That way you don't feel too bad about wasting money when you get through several nappies at one changing session. been there, done that, got the crappy t shirt

ScottishDiblet · 04/01/2014 18:47

Projectile poo is totally normal! It provided some of the very few laughs my husband and I had during the early days with our daughter! Enjoy your newborn. Xx

ElleCloughie · 04/01/2014 19:18

Totally normal. DD did this for the first time when DH was changing her - it shot onto his hand, up his sleeve and I think he got a bit on his shoulder. I nearly died laughing! Grin
