Tesco selling out of date formula

I'm pretty shocked, DH just came back with some starter bottles of cow and gate for us to try as we are desperately trying DS to take the bottle and I've read a few times that these starter bottles teats can be good for bottle refusers. I was just about to open one of the bottles when I noticed the expiry date is September 2013!!! I would have thought they would be more vigilant over dates esp on formula. Obviously going to take it back, just thought I'd post in case anyone else is planning on buying these - check the dates!!

Think I saw something about Tesco selling out of date starter bottles in one of the papers the other day too - they were a whole year out of date though.

gosh that is awful, dire in fact

photograph them, you may (depending on Tesco response) want to inform Trading Standards/Enviro Health/FSA

They were selling out of date innocent mango juice last time I went in so def not just baby milk.

I've just seen the DM article about out of date Hipp starter bottles! You would have thought they would have checked all the stores after this was bought to their attention.

supermarkets have date checking procedures to stop this happening, which this store obviously hasn't followed. definitely complain to the manager, or even higher up.

DP came back from our local caravan-site shop with not two wee cartons but twelve as the woman had checked the date before selling them and felt obliged to give them away. If they can't sell out of date (by a few days) formula then surely tesco can't? I'm sure the milk is fine, but they need to be more on the ball and I'd be furious. (As I so often am at tesco!)

BrieMonster · 05/01/2014 02:17

Just noticed OP doesn't actually refer to tesco. Oh well.

We found some out of date Hipp formula in Tesco on Thursday night. We've also been sent out of date formula by Amazon before. Assumed it was as Hipp is less popular... Maybe not! Defo check now.

It's so worrying that it's not picked up by the stock check systems. And more than one brand affected. I'm just so relieved I didn't actually give it to DS, the DM article suggests it made the baby who was given out of date formula sick. I've not yet had a chance to go back to Tesco but I'm going to ring the store to tell them so hopefully any other packs are removed. ( this shouldn't be my job!) but I'll be writing to their HO sending in evidence of my purchase too.

it's actually not illegal to sell food past the best before date only after the use by date. BB indicates that product will taste best before the date and that quality guaranteed. food still 'safe' after the date. fresh products with UB dates could spoil or grow bugs after the date but in reality are ok for a few more days (eg milk can be drunk until it smells sour). Obviously you don't want to take risks with baby food. supermarket stock keeping, means that you can have more than one date on the shelf and you have to rely on manual date checking. The product bar code doesn't include the date

mintberry · 06/01/2014 11:55

While I think that some people go OTT regarding adult food which is a little past its sell by, baby formula which is 5 months out of date is pretty shocking and they should have higher standards. I'm surprised that they don't for their own selfish reasons to be honest, I mean, imagine the trouble they would be in if someone didn't check the date and their baby got sick. Complain!

stickysausages · 06/01/2014 12:04

Complain to head office, you may well get some vouchers out of it

I was given a prescription for heartburn medicine when I was pregnant by the pharmacist in Boots that was well over a year out of date. I only realised after I'd taken it and thought it tasted funny. Sad

Went back to tell them and they tried to just give me a new bottle without even telling the pharmacist Angry I told her and she was vaguely apologetic.
Meant to further it but was so busy finishing up at work then having a baby I never quite got round to it. Think I might now although my six month old might have other ideas as I agree there are some things retailers should pay particular attention to, thoroughly irresponsible to sell out of date baby formula or give out of date medicine to heavily pregnant women....
