'Pulling' pain in one boob when feeding

I'm very happy to have managed to establish bfing with DS2, who's now just over 6wo, and I'm lucky to have had few problems bar the delirium from lack of sleep but wondered if anyone has any advice about a pain I started getting about 5 days ago? When DS is feeding from my right boob I'm getting a pulling sensation radiating in a line back from the nipple on the outer side, and it's really quite painful! I can't see any problems with latch or position, but I'm going to find a bf group to go to next week so someone can help me check this. Obviously it'll be a couple of days before I can see anyone though, so any advice/experience would be most welcome!

Hi there, I had this when BF DS (not with DD, now 5). No idea what caused it but I think his latch was fine and I didn't have any other problems - and it was only in the one boob. It never got any worse and I just got used to feeling it, then it eventually went away when DS was about, ooh, I have no idea... 4 months, maybe? Obviously if it's quite painful for you then hopefully something can be done when you get some proper advice next week, but I just wanted to reassure you that it's unlikely to be anything bad/problematic, and will probably resolve itself in a little while. Oh, and I and still BF DS (painlessly) at nearly 1 year old! Congrats on your lovely new DS!

That sounds like a blocked duct to me - any pain at other times? Redness?

Featherbag · 04/01/2014 16:24

Thanks for the reassurance snottage!

No, the pain goes within 10 minutes of finishing the feed, there's nothing visibly different about the area, it's not hot to touch and I feel systemically well. So hopefully it's nothing and will go!

Try a different position for feeding on that side. The Rugby Ball hold is a good one. The change in hold helps different parts of the breast drain.

I'll see if I can get a bf supporter to show me some different holds, thanks!

Try lying on your side in bed with DS lying parallel to feed.
Rugby ball is fairly easy. Lay him under your right arm on cushions with his feet behind you and his head in front, Or alternately lie him along your arm with your right hand under his head and his legs on either side of your elbow. You can use your hand to guide him to the breast. I'll go hunt for some links for you...

Thank you! I'll give it a go.
