Sterilising bottles on the go

I'm taking my 11 week old DD away from home for 11 days over the Christmas period, and I'm looking at ways to sterilise bottles.

I breastfeed most feeds, but she has about 1 bottle of formula a day (probably more if I'm drinking on Christmas day).

At home, we use a Tommee Tippee electric steriliser but it's really big and cumbersome, and car space is limited. We also have a Tommee Tippee travel steriliser but I've never used it, and I bought some Milton sterilising tablets too.

Can anyone offer any practical advice on how to sterilise on the go? Should I still to cold water sterilising with tablets, use the travel steriliser or just suck it up and find space for the electric steriliser?

Our journey involves 2 days in a hotel room too, so for that bit there'll be no microwave. I could breastfeed exclusively for the 2 days, but I'd like to have the option of passing her to DP using a bottle.

Thanks Xmas Smile

You can get ready made bottles!?

StarlightMcKingsThree · 21/12/2013 20:43

I never sterilised with anything other than my pfb though

In a similar situation I used to take the electric steriliser. Cold water sterilising still needs a bucket! If you have a microwave, how about investing in a microwave steriliser? Or for one or two bottles a day I'd get some of the ready made ones. Or on doc those travel microwave steriliser bags and some cartons.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 21/12/2013 20:46

I've just done cold water sterilising in similar circs

I took a basin and some fairy liquid and a new bottle brush along with some Milton wipes. Gave the area round the dunk a quick wipe and then put basin there and washed bottles with boiling water from the kettle. Then stuck them in the steriliser.

I didn't find it too bad

I just used my tommee tippee microwave steriliser as that can be used for cold water sterilising and is very small

Miggs28 · 21/12/2013 20:48

We bought an electric travel steriliser from amazon for about £20. It sterilises 2 bottles and packs up really small. We used it recently for wedding in Cornwall (away for 2 nights) and it was ideal.

C&G ready made bottles - the diddy ones like in hospital - from Mothercare, also seen them in some big supermarkets. SMA do bottles with a screw top lid and a teat that screws on seperately.

Slongette · 21/12/2013 21:02

Get the Tommee tippee microwave steriliser - 4 bottles done in 4 mins. Really quick and easy!

Depends how much space you have. If flying, I always take Milton tablets and get a big bowl from hotel (they think you're odd but usually find something!). Also if flying remember you have to taste baby products in hand luggage so milk cartons are a waste, take powder in pre measured tub like the ones from boots.

If driving and you have space I would say take whatever you're used to, microwave ones are good though.

Don't forget a little washing up liquid, it's also worth phoning ahead as lots of hotels provide sterilisers on request or if you're staying with friends they might be able to borrow for you.

MommyVan · 21/12/2013 23:17

You also get disposable sterilising bags which takes away the need for a container - this is for cold water sterilising. I used this in a hotel before.

Here clever

EnidClowes · 21/12/2013 23:28

I used the disposable sterilising bags that mommyvan linked to hen staying in hotels. Bit of a faff but great if luggage space is limited. Also took a small travel toiletry bottle with some washing up liquid and a brush.

Although now that the disposable bottles are everywhere I'd buy those and save the energy

AnythingNotEverything · 22/12/2013 04:47

You can drink and breastfeed Wink - research shows that very little alcohol gets into your milk.

Depends how much you're planning non drinking if course ...

Sunnysummer · 22/12/2013 04:49

We used the bags auggested by Mommyvan, they are great! I also kept a few tablets by in case there was no microwave - or otherwise the guidance is that if you rinse and then put in the dishwasher and use immediately afterwards, that is fine.

KikiShack · 22/12/2013 08:24

Since your OP says you already have the TT travel steriliser you're fine with that and don't need to buy anything?! Just check how much water it holds and break off the right amount of milton tablet. one tab does 5l water. I'm guessing the steriliser might be half that. have a,quick practice before you leave and you'll be fine!

Lozzapops · 22/12/2013 10:14

Are you staying with family? If you are at someone's house, you could just boil the bottle and all associated parts, on the hob for 10 minutes.
