I'm so bloody thick sometimes, I've got sinus and ear infections and a burst eardrum, got an emergency apt given amoxicillin took straight away because I was in agony.
Got home went to bed woke then thought shit I forgot to tell them I was bf. I've got to continue them because I'm in such pain which means I can't bf (checked on pack) really gutted, dd nearly 9mths but was quite happy feeding her. (Mainly through night)
Feel really shitty about the whole thing. I heart bf a lot, ð???

Yes you can! I did. Lots of people do.

oadcb · 21/12/2013 17:02

Doesn't have to be the end esp at 9mths.

Look at breastfeeding network website for info on medications. Maybe you can pump and dump if you can't feed.

oadcb · 21/12/2013 17:03

Packs always say no BTW. Check bfn for actual risks if any

Shesparkles · 21/12/2013 17:03

Please don't feel bad! I went through an identical experience when dd (who is now 16) was about 6 months old, and I felt equally shitty.
What's most important is that you recover and go on being the fab mum you've been so far-you've done a great job BF for this long, now it's time to be kind to yourself xx
PS my dd has excellent health, is beautiful and has had cracking exam results, she doesn't hate me for having to stop BF to get myself well Wink

oadcb · 21/12/2013 17:06

Just checked amoxicillian is fine to take whilst bf.

plannedshock · 21/12/2013 17:07

Super quick replies, I would rather continue, and finish at my leisure and relish the last feed!
Any website recommendations?
She would be fine on bottles now but I just love feeding! I also took 1 co-codamol for pain relief.

From googling it is ok while breast feeding

oadcb · 21/12/2013 17:12

Google breastfeeding network

PaschasDanglyReindeerBaubles · 21/12/2013 17:15

BFN advice says YES

The BFN number is here if you want to double check.

Ditsy79 · 21/12/2013 17:17

Hi! I'm a pharmacist. Just double-checked the British National Formulary, and it says Amoxicillin is fine while BF. Small amounts do go into the milk, but not enough to have any effect.

plannedshock · 21/12/2013 17:27

Thank you so much everyone, ditsy, would 1 co codamol be ok?

I was prescribed amoxicillin straight from the hospital with newborn ds due to infection risk from episiotomy. They absolutely knew I was breast feeding and I still anxiously double checked with the midwife when I got home. He was tiny and completely dependent on breast milk and it was fine, he had no ill effects from it. A 9 month old would be taking less milk than a newborn.

DS bf until he was two and I had another course of amoxicillin in that time as well, I made sure the prescribing doctor knew I was breastfeeding and she looked it up to make sure. Ds had slightly runny nappies for a few days until I finished the course that time, nothing more. It's not ideal, but if you need them then you need them.

Check with the pharmacist if it will give you peace of mind.

Ditsy79 · 21/12/2013 18:45

The BNF says to avoid co-codamol, as you break codeine down into morphine in your body and it can go into the breast milk. Paracetamol would be fine though.

plannedshock · 21/12/2013 21:36

Onwards with the feeding then Yey!! Thank you! Now just to feel better...

Yay! Basically never go by pack inserts as they pretty much always say not suitable for breastfeeding, even if the amount that gets into your milk is miniscule and/or it's a drug that would be safe to be given directly to babies in much larger amounts, like amoxicillin. If you look up specialist drugs in breastfeeding resources they're much more likely to give you useful information.

Good resources for future reference -
BFN Factsheets: www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugs-in-breastmilk-information-and-factsheets.html
Lactmed database: toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT

(I know this stuff as have managed to be really ill in the first year after having both my sons - I have at this stage safely fed two babies on, variously, prescription painkillers, SSRIs with DS1, about four different antibiotics, steroids, and some weird lung degunger)
