Refusing solids?

hi,

my baby is now ten month old and still exclusively breastfed....he is refusing solids and will not have anything to do with anything that doesn't come out of my boobs!

which is fine by me....he looks healthy enough and seems happy...

howewever i'm just interested really in whether other mums had the same experiences with their babies and how those eventually started eating anything other than the breast....

lumpy foods or still puree?
from the adult plate straight away??

just looking for experiences!

Mine is 9 months and similar - she is on a bottle but has totally refused any attemps to wean using a spoon. Health visitor said give up and go straight to finger food. DD is happy with that obviously doesn't get as much as if I shovelled in puree but we got to the stage where she would puke rather than take a spoon in her mouth. She will try anything with her fingers - much less fussy than her traditionally weaned brother!

Hi, my sisters DD would only spoon feed if she were in her mums lap in a similar position as for breastfeeding - to start with! My DD only ever fed herself, and wouldn't take anything much from a spoon. she liked finely grated cheese from a very early age, to feed herself with. The only way I could slip a spoonfull in now and then was if she was occupied with her own selection of finger foods. She happily let me give her a few spoons full of food one day recently (at 20 months!), we virtually skipped that stage, so it was nice to have a go .

Well, sometimes they're so satisfied with their breast milk (or bottle milk too for that matter) that they're just not hungry for anything else. My dd was v. slow to take up any other kind of food but I persisted and now she's not bad. But not great either.

Apologies for long post. My ds 17mths old now, he is breasfed, would only eat cooked pear puree and mango puree from about 8 mths; only tiny amounts and literally as iced slush which I made and froze into ice cubes . He also ate a little junior yofu (soya yohgurt, the dairy yoghurt and fromage frais I think he found to thick and would gag.) The few spoons he ate certainly wasn't any replacement for breast feeding! He remained like this till approx 13 months, we just would try different sweet foods i.e. mashed bananna watered down a little etc the odd bit of finger food. Breast milk is very sweet hence starting with fruit. To be frank have you eaten baby rice, bottled baby food or formular milk? Tastes disgusting if I won't eat it I can't expect child to eat! (though commercial some pure fruit purees are aren't to bad).
Cant remember where I read this, may be in Le Leche book, that breast feeding solely for a year is OK as long as baby is healthy and developing after that the main concerns are about baby getting enough iron. Plus solids offer a more concentrated form of energy supply released over a longer period than breast milk which is designed to be absorbed quickly, as baby gets older you will find that they will breast feed frequently and for longer periods to get energy unless they are eating solids. My HV abit old fashioned so did not inform her I was doing this but at checks he is healthy and been on 25th ctl for weight and 75th for height since he was born. He now eats lots of flavours including curries, tomatoe sauces etc, small amounts 4 times daily. Either v smooth puree when not well or as solids, lumpy puree makes him gag!The flavours you eat will pass through into your milk.

So don't worry you know your baby best!

Hi there - had problems with my baby eating solids too, now 1 year old and a lot less fussy, but had to persist with fruit purees and jars of porridge for quite a while and only likes savoury food if home-cooked. Trying food from my plate, including toast soldiers dipped in a boiled egg's yolk sometimes works well. Patience and persistance - I expect the baby knows when he's ready for food, although it can be exasperating!
