What would you do? Breastfeeding problem

LO is now 2 weeks old, today she has had episode of major fussiness at breast, she went on at about 2.30 and was ok at first then became squirmy, wriggly, and kept pulling off breast and crying, still major hungry cos she was eating her hands and head was bobbing away but she wasn't staying on breast properly. I'm pretty sure the latch is ok as no different to any other time. This went on for 4 hours!!
What do u think it is? What would u do?

wind?
sit her on your knee side-on and holding her chin rub her back?

ChaffinchOfDoom · 15/12/2013 19:30

assuming her weight gain ok/ latch is ok etc ? does she normally go for 20 mins ish at a time? do you offer both sides?

wind would be my 1st suspicion Smile

congratulations to you!

Tried winding her and that doesn't help, she hasn't slept now in 5 hours! Still showing signs of hunger.... It's so hard to know what to do, nappies are wet and was told weight gain was normal, she hadn't lost any since birth or she had got back to birth weight.

Is she back to birth weight? If so just a growth spurt probably, on and off and crabby and then it calms and you go back to normal. Most mums experience this sometimes in the early days. Some of us experience it plenty:)

Hotmad · 15/12/2013 19:35

Up to 8 - 10 times a day usually, I just don't think it's ok that she hasn't slept In so long, and despite being on breast for 4 or 5 hours she is still hungry!

So she is doing well, you are doing great...they can go for hours doing this and the next day our supply shoots up.

OfficeSupplies · 15/12/2013 19:37

It's not exactly hunger, she is making your body work hard to make more milk. This is cluster feeding, all babies do it, most mums feel like feeding is going wrong but it is normal. She will konk out eventually.

My DS would do this at growth spurts or possibly just comfort. Then when I had extra milk the next day would vomit it all over me! After that the supply would settle down again till the next time. It's hard going those early weeks so well done!

crikeybadger · 15/12/2013 19:56

Also might be checking for any illness - thrush, ear infection?

FastWindow · 15/12/2013 20:06

I've got this with my dd 12w.

Latches on fine (she's an old hand now, if boob is remotely accessible she's on it like a limpet) but recently she Latches on and immediately pulls away (ouch!) then back on, back off, ad infinitum.

It's weird. Possible answers I've seen on other threads are :
Wind
Overstimulation (TV on, lights too bright)
Growth spurt

My sister's suggestion: sensitivity to something you are eating. With her ds2 she had to cut out onions, she only worked it out by trial and error.

I just make sure I've got a drink and snacks and my phone and settle in for the long haul!
