Tongue tie

Here I am again asking for advice of wise mumsnetters.
My first dd born 2 years ago had a very obvious tongue tie (not spotted in hospital but by someone once we'd left hospital) and many problems breast feeding plus significant weight loss after birth etc. we had the tie snipped after a week or so but feeding was always quite difficult which could have been down to my lack of confidence.

Now dd2 has arrived. She lost a lot of weight after birth a month or so ago and her feeds are being topped up principally with expressed milk. The week i dropped top ups dd failed yo gain much weight despite frequent feeding. In hospital, they had a bf specialist who said dd2's tongue was fine.

Since then her feeding seems ok but she is very slurpy, windy and falls asleep at the breast (although this may be wind as she wakes up once burped).my nipples are usually slightly flattened after a feed although I have no pain etc.

However (and thank you for reading this far) dd2 had a heart shaped 'line' at the tip of her tongue and I think also has tongue tie. Does this always mean tt and do I need to have this sorted out.

I think given that tongue tie is genetic and she has a heart shaped tongue and lots of problems associated with TT, I would definitely try and get a referral to an expert. It maybe a posterior tie which are apparently very tricky to spot.

If you can find a lactation specialist they would be able to check for anterior and posterior tongue ties and lip ties. If you live anywhere near Luton there is a very good Nhs clinic at Chaul End on Friday mornings. Good luck. My First had TT but once we had got it snipped I went on to feed her for 14 months. The other two did not have TT but it took me ages and pain to establish bfeeding again. It was worth it though!

Thank you. I'm not sure where to go for advice. I live in south London.

Ooh I think there is a clinic at St George's. What's your GP like? Mine referred me to a different London hospital no questions asked (although took ages so we went privately in the end)

link to locations TT can be divided

Looks like they also do divisions at Kings if you are SE as opposed to SW.

If you're anywhere near Twickenham, there's an excellent lactation specialist there who does tongue tie snips and is very knowledgeable and caring - she trained with Mervyn Griffiths, 'the' TT specialist doctor in Southampton.
