Nappy rash

Just wondering if 3wo DS's horrible nappy rash is related to being ebf, and if anyone has any advice on how to deal with it? I'm using sensitive nappies, changing every 3 hours maximum and applying metanium once bottom is clean and carefully dried, yet what started off as a small raw area around his anus is now spreading, and looks so sore, he has started crying when filling his nappy as it must sting the raw skin. I'm at a loss what to do, I've tried Bepanthen too but it keeps getting worse.

is it an even colour or kind of dotty looking?

If you can try and have some nappy off time - either on your lap or floor on a towel or something to contain any mess. Make sure you change nappy as soon as poos/wees if possible.

If it is possible for you, switch to reusable nappies as they are much less likely to cause nappy rash. Failing that some "eco" briends of nasties may have far less rubbish in that may hurt babies skin.

Also don't use baby wipes. Clean with cloth and water or cold chamomile tea may be soothing.

I was nuts about nappy rash. I mean nuts!

So, what I did was give my baby maximum time possible with no nappy. No nappy = fresh air and dryness.

When I changed the nappy, I left my baby with bare bum for as long as possible before he got fed up/tired/hungry. In a perfect world he would pee or poo on the nappy below which would mean one less pee or poo in the nappy he was going to wear.

This regime was actually quite hard because it's pretty boring watching a semi-naked baby lie on a mat.

Sorry, long story short; fresh air helps.

PS - You love, you care, you ask - that's how new mums cope. You are doing great.

Have you been to the GP? My DS had terrible nappy rash that wouldn't shift. It ended up bleeding it was so bad. I took him to a walk in clinic, but they refused to even look at it, saying to carry on with usual creamsAngry

The following week I managed to get an appointment with my GP who told me it was a thrush infection. The cream she prescribed cleared it up in less than 24 hours.

Definitely get it looked at. Reusable nappies were brilliant for us too.

PPS - I've just read ItsAllGoingToBeFine. Wise woman.

No chemical rubbishy wipes.

Reusable nappies aren't an option, but I will try leaving him nappy-free for as long as possible - I don't mind mess at all but I'm paranoid about him getting cold, we have a very drafty house and it's freezing here! Guess I'll just turn the heating up. I do try to change him as soon as I realise he's wet/dirty, but at night I don't always realise until he wakes for a feed. I use cotton wool and water.

Poo is bright yellow and grainy, whoever asked! I did wonder about thrush - if it's no better after the weekend I'll ring the GP.

and surprisingly good old savlon seemed to help where nappy creams were making tags worse. It was soothing.

Featherbag · 13/12/2013 19:26

I've just done a google image search for 'nappy rash thrush' - that looks very, very much like DS's poor little bottom! VERY much! Think I'll be calling the GP on Monday, thanks nancerama!

Ask the GP for Timodene. It's magical stuff.

And hugs to you. It's horrible seeing them so uncomfortable, isn't it?

Featherbag · 13/12/2013 19:39

I'm going to ring GP first thing Monday, thanks!

And DH is on his way to ASDA for Savlon!

The only bad rash we had that metanium didn't sort was thrush/fungal. That's why I asked about it looking dotty.
If you have a late night chemist then 1% canesten cream will probably help until Monday

Featherbag · 13/12/2013 20:07

I actually have an unopened tube of 1% Canestan, will it be ok to use on a tiny bum?

Sorry I didn't answer your question tweety, I thought you meant the poo not the rash! The rash is dotty.

What are sensitive nappies? Are they pampers?

DD reacted to pampers with horrendous nappy rash that no cream would help. Until I worked out it was the pampers and switched to Lidls.

tweetytwat · 14/12/2013 00:16

yes it's fine to useSmile

Featherbag · 16/12/2013 16:23

HV has been today and confirmed thrush, thanks so much those who commented!

Was just going to say thrush! Ds4 has had it quite a few times, none of the others ever did. I now know that if a day of bepanthan cream doesn't work its because he has thrush

nancerama · 16/12/2013 18:25

I hope the little chap is on the mend now.

Featherbag · 28/12/2013 20:18

Just a little update - little bottom is almost healed and peachy again after a course of clotrimazole, it got worse before it got better but when it did start to heal it got a lot better very quickly! Thanks so much to those who gave advice, I felt so helpless as DS1 never once had nappy rash so I didn't know what to do when the usual creams made it worse rather than better!
