When to stop breastfeeding

My little man is 9 months old and I'm still breastfeeding him.
I was just wondering how old did people carry on breastfeeding till?

3.3 so far.

Faverolles · 13/12/2013 09:43

I'm still feeding ds and he's nearly 3.
You don't have to stop at a certain age.
If it's working for you and your ds, you can carry on.
Alternatively, if you're ready to stop, then stop.

Cies · 13/12/2013 09:52

My dd is just 1 yo and going v strong.

I fed ds till 2.4.

It's completely up to you how long you bf for. Smile

lilyaldrin · 13/12/2013 09:53

Stop whenever you and your baby want to! I stopped just after a year.

CitrusyOne · 13/12/2013 09:54

13 and a half months. She stopped this week. Am a little bit sad.

MrsReacher85 · 13/12/2013 09:57

I'm night weaning now at 15 months, those were our last feeds. I expected to feel a little sad but mostly I feel relived. That's how I know I was definitely ready to stop. We gradually weaned all day feeds between 7-12 months and he has just had cows milk in the day since just before his 1st birthday.

StarsUponThars · 13/12/2013 10:01

Just over two years Smile. But everyone will have a different answer, you have to decide what's best for you and your child.

duchesse · 13/12/2013 10:10

When you and/or the child have had enough! Nobody else has any say in this relationship- it's between you and your child.

I breastfed 4 children, for 13, 18, 24 and 30 months. The last one was about 6 months longer than I wanted but she was getting ill a lot from being at nursery and there was never a very good time to stop. She would possibly be happily still feeding now (aged 4 &1/4) but I certainly wouldn't be.

leedy · 13/12/2013 10:37

2.5 for DS1, still going at 13 months with DS2. It's really up to what suits you and your child, though I must say I've found feeding an older baby lovely both times - there's nice recent thread here about the joys of toddler nursing (can miss feeds without a problem, great for illness/teething, etc.).

noblegiraffe · 13/12/2013 10:45

I meant to stop at 13 months but it didn't feel like the right time, so we carried on till 17 months which was right for both of us.

worldgonecrazy · 13/12/2013 10:46

We stopped at 15 months. It wasn't planned, it was just one night she fed and the next she didn't and that was it. I still miss the closeness that bfing brings.

TinyTear · 13/12/2013 10:47

22 months and no signs of stopping
:-)

HalleLouja · 13/12/2013 10:52

Stopped at 13 months with DC1 and 2 years (well a week before) with DC2.

MissPlumBroughtALadder · 13/12/2013 10:52

I firmly believe in allowing babies/toddlers to self-wean and think two years should be the minimum.

thenicknameiwantedisgone · 13/12/2013 10:53

There is no 'right' answer, it is whatever works for you.

With DS1 I stopped at 8 months, well he did really. With DS2 it was 2yrs 3mths, again his choice.

DeathMetalMum · 13/12/2013 11:13

Dd1 was 22 months it was time to stop for me (pg at the time) didn't take anything other than a switch in routine and a bit of distraction.

Dd2 is 9 months and still feeding not sure on my plans on when to stop. Dd2 isn't as much of a boob monster as dd1 was.

littlewind · 13/12/2013 13:35

At about 9 months onwards how many feeds a day where they having?

Think around that age both mine were having feeds in the morning, around lunchtime, late afternoon, and bedtime, with a number of night feeds between zero and, er, several depending on teething/illness/crankiness/being a baby/etc.

DS2 is still pretty much on that pattern except he has his lunchtime milk in a cup in nursery on the days I'm in work. I think DS2 dropped the lunchtime feed around 14 months, then the late afternoon one, then we night weaned, so was on morning and bedtime for over a year, then just bedtime.

lilyaldrin · 13/12/2013 13:56

At 9 months I had just stopped the last night feed, so morning, before am nap, before and after pm nap, bedtime - probably 5ish.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 13/12/2013 13:59

Mines 10 months and still feeding quite a bit. I want to cut it down to 4 times a day to start with

noblegiraffe · 13/12/2013 14:12

My 10 month old is having 3 daytime feeds, one in the morning, one after lunch to get her to nap, and one at bedtime. The aim is to get her to just morning and bedtime after Xmas, as I'm going back to work.

Unfortunately she still feeds in the night. I'll be tackling that when she turns one.

HalleLouja · 13/12/2013 14:54

My DS had three feeds a day around then give or take.

My DD was feeding lots more and less in her own routine than DS was.

msmiggins · 13/12/2013 15:07

My children self weaned. Both my kids were 4 years old.
