I've been advised to add extra water to formula - is that ok?

My 14week old is 7.4kg, 63cm taking on average 1250ml per day over 6 or 7 feeds. We're feeding on demand so it vaeries feed to feed, day to day as you'd expect.
The doctor has said to add an extra 30ml of water to every bottle, because he did that with his formula fed kids.

Is it really ok or recommend to do this esp when feeding on demand?

Won't it just mean over time the baby takes more liquid to fill up and make more problems 're fullness and stomach size?

Why is he telling you to do that? Is it because the baby is very hungry? Water isn't going to solve that problem is it?!

I'd just wean him to be honest.

NoAddedSuga · 10/12/2013 17:54

No never do that

Its dangerous! You have to be so careful with measuring formula milk etc, you can make a baby very ill by not doing it correctly

bundaberg · 10/12/2013 17:55

why has he said that you should do it?

i would carry on as you are tbh if you and baby are happy.

and please don't wean at 14 weeks Hmm

NoAddedSuga · 10/12/2013 17:57

Dont wean him for christ sake!!!

Give formula and nothing else until 6 months. Alot of research has gone into the problems a baby has in adult life from being weaned under 6 months.

The adult wont develop problems until middle aged.

YoDiggity · 10/12/2013 17:58

What are these problems?

purplemurple1 · 10/12/2013 18:02

Sorry to drip feed - I don't know why it's been recommended I had an answer phone message from the hv telling me. He was weighed and measured today so maybe because of that.

No it's not good advice at all. Your effectively diluting formula which can make a baby sick. You effectively start trying bottles of water or a doidy cup if he's thirsty between feeds or getting constipated or whatever. Bilut adding water to the formula is not a good idea

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/12/2013 18:06

And yo.

Weaning before 17 weeks is not advised. Can cause all sorts of digestive problems in later life even if nothing appears to happen at first.

HavantGuard · 10/12/2013 18:07

Watering down formula is not recommended. I would look at your red book. Is yor baby following similar lines for height and weight?

purplemurple1 · 10/12/2013 18:11

I'm abroad so no red book and I think they are comparing him to breastfeeding charts as that is the norm here.
Can any one check for me if they have their book to hand?

if you google I think WHO publish the weight charts online

MoominsYonisAreScary · 10/12/2013 18:34

Do they think he's putting on to much weight? Id ignore them tbh. Doesn't sound like they know what they are talking about. You shouldn't add more water to the formula it can be dangerous.

tiktok · 10/12/2013 19:14

He's a chunky boy, but sounds in proportion (have not checked).

If the doctor is asking you to mess about with his intake like this, he should at least grant you the courtesy of explaining the clinical reason.

Don't understand the reason behind the suggestion to wean either - it's a mystery what good that would do! :)

EmmaFreudsGivingMeJip · 10/12/2013 19:59

Can you try hungry baby formula? (Sorry if this is not a good suggestion, DC1 due in Feb so I'm new to this)
