BF and general anaesthetic

DS (just 3) still has bf overnight (cosleeping). He's been ill last 5 days and has been asking for more than usual. I'm due to have a minor day case procedure on Friday, have already had my pre op and never thought to ask whether I can bf afterwards. Can anyone advise please? TIA

Absolutely fine. Once you're able to be up and about, the anaesthetic is out of your system enough to breastfeed. Worth mentioning to the anaesthetist for reassurance as you'll see them before the op for any last minute business but I've had a general at about 4pm for a minor day procedure, went home soon after the op and breastfed dd (2.7 at the time) before bed. I was advised that it was fine.

All the best for the op.

I asked this question of my anaesthetist when I had an ankle repair when DD3 was 15 months. She said, once the anaesthetic has worn off and you've woken up, it's cleared your system so you're fine. If you're worried you could pump and dump the first milk after the op but there will be very very little in there. I had a GA for DD3's birth and breast fed her from birth (well, expressed and fed anyway, from barely awake after the GA). I can't imagine she got anything like the dose from the milk that she must have got from the placenta during the CS.

I had a general anasthetic after the birth of DS2, I started BFing him 4 days after (for different reasons) but had plenty of milk and had not been told by anyone that I shouldn't BF if I had the GA.

I had a GA recently and asked about 500 times and they all said it was fine.

I've had lots of GAs whilst breast feeding. The GA itself is not a problem as previous posters have said. It's the drugs they may need to give you during and post op that you need to check. On a couple of occasions I was given industrial strength antibiotics or painkillers that meant I had to pump and dump at least once before bf. Hope all goes well.
