11 week old having TT snip this week - a question for post procedure.

Hi my 11wo is going to be assessed for TT this week. 99.9% sure he has one so if the case will be snipped.

At the moment I top him up with bm/formula and he has a dummy.

However, I've been told by bf counsellor that for at least a few days no dummy/bottle as he has to re learn latch. Bottles - fine, I only use them because he struggles to get what he wants and at times I'm incredible sore.

The dummy is more of an issue. He won't feed to sleep so dummy is the only way of doing so. I've tried numerous times to put him to the breast when I know he's tired but he gets angry and takes it out on my nipple! Once he's asleep he spits it out but I'm concerned he's not going to sleep :-( the only time he will fall asleep without it is in the car but I can't really go out driving at 4am when he wakes and just needs to be settled back to sleep.

Any advice?

We had ds2's tt snipped at 14 weeks. He never took a dummy or bottle & just wanted boob for comfort. He had to learn to relatch so was a bit unsettled for a day or 2 feeding while he got the hang of it. Could it be that your lo doesn't feed to sleep because with the tt he can't get a comfortable enough latch so it's hard work feeding & he can't relax enough to fall asleep? Personally I'd try going cold turkey with the dummy & see what happens.

Sorry not much help, hopefully someone better will be along in a minute!

Hi

Firstly I would say it is worth listening to everything your hv, bfing counsellor, mum, friend says and then doing what works for you. So try not giving the dummy. If dc just cannot settle then give it to them.

Things worth trying in between are letting baby suck your little finger to soothe and slipping it out when they are asleep. Dd took it upon her self to stuff anything she could grab in her mouth this was usually her clothes but I replaced it with a muslin. At nearly 2 she still sucks her muslin to sleep.

Secondly
When dds tt was snipped her latch was instantly different and the wide eyed shock when she got her first proper mouthful of boob was delightful. What did take a while to adjust was my supply, it was two weeks before I was able to completely drop top up feeds

Thirdly
For anterior (front) tt
The procedure is nothing! I dreaded it so much but it was over in less than a min
Step 1 swaddle baby 10 secs
Step 2 baby cries and they reach in with blunt ended scissors and snip 2 secs
Step 3 poke nipple in babies mouth

That's it Smile

My ds had his snipped much earlier but even still he never learned to feed to sleep and doesn't have a dummy. We walk/rock him to sleep. It might be a bit tedious but worth it IMO.
I never used formula all bottles were expressed bm so my supply was fine to stop bottles immediately. If you haven't been expressing I'd advise starting now in order to build supply ahead of the snip.

Good luck. For us it was 100% positive.

Thank you so much for all your replies.

ab it could be that so who knows! He tends to fight with my boob without letting go as if he doesn't want anything to come out!

Fortunately my supply is great and my body tends to react very quickly to the extra feeds (some days I can totally bf him and my boobs consistently feel full the next few days. other days I am too sore and need to give my nips a break) I don't express to much because of time (I have a 4yo too)

He will suck my little finger but I've not tried it to get him to sleep so that's worth a try.

I am dreading the procedure but mainly the support at home is not 100% just a "if you want it done" kinda thing. If anything goes wrong afterwards I feel like I only have myself to blame.

That last bit meaning I need to do all I can to make this successful.

We had posterior TT cut at 12 weeks.

No one said to stop using a dummy so we carried on!

His latch was a bit better but he was still not a great feeder as he didn't open him mouth very wide.
That seemed to improve with age though.

Now all we have a problem with is his wriggling around during any daytime feed! It's a never-ending battle to feed this one, but not with TT being the cause anymore!

At a recent appointment for tt we were advised not to introduce anything new for a few days, but if we used bottles/dummy just to be extra vigilant on hygiene to avoid the risk of infection whilst the area heals. Fingers crossed things improve for you. A week after the procedure we are yet to see much improvement in terms of feeding or weight gain. So frustrating!

Appt is 9am.

Shitting it.

I can cope without bottles but dummy maybe more a problem.
