Am having to use mendela shields as dd seems not tone able to suck my nipple far enough into her mouth. The sensation of nipple being sucked in and out in and out is toecurlingly painful, it's nothing like feeding my previous 2.

I am fine with shields but wondered if maybe I am doing something wrong. Would be nice not to have to use them as takes so long to feed her but really not the end of the world as she putting on weight at a rate of knots.

Oh I don't know, any words of wisdom ladies would've greatly appreciated.

Hopefully someone will be along soon and congratulations Thanks

Has your DD been checked for tongue tie? Can she poke out her tongue, and what shape is it when she tries?

My DS couldn't latch properly. He somehow managed to get enough milk to pile on the weight but it was incredibly painful for me and I got mastitis three times by the end. He had a 65% posterior TT - midwife couldn't detect it (due to it being posterior), but HV and breastfeeding advisor both diagnosed it and lactation consultant confirmed. Definitely worth asking because if that's the problem it won't get better fr you until the TT is sorted.

By the way, the sensation for me was like having a cheesegrater applied to my nipples. Does that ring any bells?

How old is your baby?
It could be that she is not attaching deeply enough and the nipple is not reaching the spot where is should. As her mouth opens wide, bring her quickly on to the breast.
Has anyone watched you latch her on?

Thanks guys. Just had friend over and she thinks is TT. Dd can't open mouth very widely and only sleeps and doesn't suffer from awful wind when she has been bottle fed ebm. Friend (who is midwife) said sounds like she only getting foremilk and this is full of sugar and no fat so that's making her unsatisfied and windy!

Cheese grater analogy sounds so right. That and my nipple being compressed like a lolly stick sort of shape.

Am going to ring community team in the morning and hopefully they will see me.

Sounds like it could be. Have a google of milk matters tongue tie. It might be worth seeing if there is a lactation consultant who specialises in tt in your area here Smile
