How do you make up a bottle - stopping breast feeding?

So I am looking to stop breast feeding ds2 (6mo) and I am at that procrastinating stage where my head knows I should stop but I am not really ready.

Ds has always had a formula feed at 7pm and I just make the bottle up with boiling water and cool quickly before giving it to him.

I want to start introducing a bottle at night (ds is up at 12, 2, 4, and then 6) hv recommended giving a bottle at 12 but going downstairs to make it is a pain

and in the day and an struggling to be organised to make it up so just bf as its easier.

Any tips, especially on how you make your bottles up.

Bumping for you OP - someone will have some tips for making them up safely and quickly at night.

I breastfed passed 6 months for this reason - that I'm lazy and couldn't be arsed to make up bottles 3 times a night; it was far easier to slip dd across, feed and put her back to her Grin

You say your head wants to stop - what do you mean? If your heart says carry on, carry on. It depends how much of a burden bf'ing is to you. Some mums find it fits with their way of doing things, others find it harder - especially beyond 6 months when it isn't seen as socially 'normal'

I had no intention to feed for longer than 6 months but I couldn't really find a decent reason to stop.

to bed not to her Grin. Not quite sure how that slipped in

You could use the ready made cartons or large bottles if you're going to replace just the 12pm feed. They are probably the quickest way to get a bottle ready in the middle of the night. Obviously a bit more expensive than powder though.

You can make up bottles from powder in advance and keep in a fridge for 24 hrs - flash cool them and put them in the back of the fridge. It's not "recommended" by WHO but they do say it's acceptable if you need to do it.

Why not just keep BF until 12 months? Then you can just move onto cow's milk, no bother about making up bottles.

Seems mad to stop if you're not ready and it's extra effort to do the alternative just because he's reached a particular age.

I do want to stop, I want to be able to hand him to someone else for more than an hour or so. Also looking to go back to work so would like to get him onto bottle more often.

With ds 1 I started talking about stopping at 7 months and did finally at 9 months. I just need to get my head into the rigt place.

I might try the ready made stuff at midnight, but he only take about 100ml so it seams like a waste.

If the formula was in the fridge I would still need to warm it a little so it's just about as quick to make one.

Thanks for the replya

You can move to FF during the day and BF at night until he drops the feeds if you want to/find it easier. At 6m your supply will regulate to suit and if you feel an emotional connection to BFing but it's not practical for you during the day you can mix feed quite easily.

In terms of practicalities you can make fresh and flash cool, you can use the perfect prep method (3oz hot water, add powder, shake, 4oz cold water for a 7oz bottle - adjust quantities to suit), you can make a batch and fridge them to warm as needed. Or you can use cartons or the larger bottles of ready made.

I do the 3oz boiling and 4oz cooled boiled too - it's almost instant and quicker than warming one up from the fridge anyway! If I could afford it I would use cartons and have a carton, sterilised bottle and pair of scissors by my bed!!

Thanks nom and fairy will definitely try that method sounds like a good solution.
