Green Poo

youaremychocolatecake · 06/12/2013 10:54

My baby is 5 weeks old and for the last 2 weeks his poo has been on and off green. It varies between light browny yellow, a slightly darker brown and then occasionally like a mossy green which seems to be flecked with green strands almost? It maybe happens once or twice in a day (he poos a lot!!)

He is otherwise well/content and is gaining weight and sleeping well. He is fussy in the evenings but I think in a normal newborn way. He is also very farty (since birth) and sometimes appears to be in discomfort with his tummy.

I was on antibiotics for an infection and assumed this was causing the green but I have been finished them a week now so I'd have thought they'd be out of my system?

Does anyone have any thoughts/advice for me? Don't want to just ignore it if he's in some kind of discomfort and Google is a minefield of conflicting information like usual. Green and frothy tends to point towards milk imbalance but it's not frothy?!

TIA

Sometimes the poo is greenish if baby is getting too much foremilk and not enough hind milk. Try feeding baby starting from the boob you last fed from. Good luck, aren't poops lovely!

My DS pooed the colours of the Irish counties - every shade of green you can imagine up to and including lime. The HV was like 'meh' - I think it is the breastmilk variations. I was also on ABs but only until 3 weeks.

Mention to your HV but I'm sure it is nothing to worry about.

Here's the link to my mumsnet query about the same thing. Hope it helps. In the end I've decided he's happy so I will stop worrying!

Green poo has nothing to do with fore and hind milk. It's normal. As your child is eating well and thriving, carry on as you are.

I can and will find you an article about it tomorrow.

Also yes cluster feeding in the evening is normal. Exhausting but normal.

I worried about it as well in the first few weeks and read so much about it - lots of different opinions. Even now at nearly 6 months we get the occasional green one.
It's easier said than done but I don't think it's something to worry about - just a sign that digestion is a bit off, and when very newborn it does take time for their digestive system to work well.
It's more acidic and runny when green so need to be very scrupulous about immediate nappy change to prevent a rash though.

My DD mainly did green poos for her first 12 weeks or so. We had many varieties, from green slime to pesto poos. We very rarely had the mustard seed type. She also did very explosive poos during this time. I asked the HV what might be causing the explosions, and she said they were normal. HV happened to see green marks on nappy and expressed surprise at the colour. Offered no explanation, suggested I mention it tyo the GP but I didn't feel the need to since DD was otherwise healthy. I was taking Spatone iron supplements at the time and decided to stop to see if it helped with the poosplosions. It may have been a coincidence but ther explosions stopped and we started getting yellow poo.

Can I also add that I'm not convinced by the foremilk-hindmilk imbalance theory - from what I've read, hindmilk kicks in pretty quickly sdo unless you only feed for as minute per boob your baby will be getting enough of it.

Thank you all, very helpful. Will mention it to gp at 8 week check but try not to panic about it until then x

My DD used to have green poo when I are certain foods! If I ate anything at all from the chippy, it was a lovely shade of green BlushGrin
