Is it possible to wean without engorgment?

I am desparate to wean my 4mo from ebf to the bottle after a tricky feeding experience ending in mastitis and a horrible breast abscess nightmare. But I have to avoid engorgment at all costs (because of the risk of another flare-up).

So I am asking: Is it possible to wean without engorgment? And if so, how?

I have to be so careful and am terrified of the thought of another abscess, but am due to go insane if I don't stop bf soon, it is painful and constant, and bringing me down :(

Any tips welcomed!

Just do t slowly. A feed every few days/week.

Every few days, replace a breastfeed with a bottle.

When you feel engorged, express just enough (and no more!) to relieve the pain and pressure.

Give the NCT helpline a bell - doing it gradually is the right idea but their bf counsellors should be able to give you more specific info about the best way to tail off bf while avoiding engorgement.

Don't be afraid they'll give you a hard time about giving up breastfeeding or anything like that (I know some people worry about calling a bf helpline for that reason) but they won't. They're there to offer info and support, and their bf counsellors are very well informed.

Hope it all goes well.
