EBF baby and bottles

My DS is 6 weeks old (nearly 7) and I'd like to get him to take an expressed bottle. A friend of mine encouraged me to start earlier and, well, I never quite found the time to express, what with having a newborn and all...

Anyway, now he's screaming blue murder web we try with the bottle. Any tips to encourage him to take the bottle?

DH has been giving it rather than me. We're using the Avent natural bottles and teats. I've heard that the Nuk teats might be easier for him. Any thoughts on this? And does anyone know if they'll fit the Avent bottles? I'd rather not have to buy bottles as well as teats.

Thanks. I'd really like to make it to the office christmas party on Thursday but I might struggle at this rate!

I never managed to get Dd to take a bottle. She got so pissed off when I tried it didn't really seem worth it. Wasted a fair bit of money on bottles too. Once I stopped trying it was a lot less stressful.

Would he take enough through a cup feed? I'm sure people will be along soon who can suggest things to help.

Hope you manage to go & have a good time Smile

I had the very same problem but dd was 3 months. So even more of a boob addict by then Wink. Perseverance was the main key for us. DH would give her a bottle as part of her bedtime routine every night. Sometimes she'd do the lot other times she'd push it away. Through this process (and lots of help from other mumsnetters) we found that DD likes Dr Brown teats better than the Avent ones, milk nice and warm (so it feels warm if tried on your skin) and it helped if she was properly hungry. I've had a couple of mornings off and she's happily gulped down a bottle. She won't settle for bedtime but tbh I haven't pushed or really tried that and after the initial 2 - 3 weeks of getting her used to the bottle we only use it on the very rare occasion we need too. Good luck and hope you get to enjoy your Xmas party :)

We had similar problems with DD as we didn't start til wk 6 to ensure Bf'ing was well established. Eventually got her to take a bottle at 10 weeks(!)
NUK are the only ones she would tolerate and it took perseverance. It's definitely easier when she's not quite hungry yet iyswim.
Good luck Thanks

Thanks.

Another unsuccessful attempt earlier. I'm going to get some NUK teats tomorrow and we'll try warming the milk - previously we've been giving it at room temp. does tgat mean we can't re-use it if we're not sucessful? I've been sticking it back in the fridge so long as we've been within the storage guidelines for EBM.

I suspect its unlikely I'll make the party.

NUK latex teats worked for us. I think DS was about 9 weeks when we tried them after 3 stressful weeks mostly failing with tommee tippee ctn (and a couple of tries with avent). No idea if the teats fit other bottles, I just bit the bullet and paid out. He has one bottle a day, bf the rest.
We still have the odd occasion when DS isn't really in the mood but it's mostly good. He takes a bottle in a similar way to how he bfs - slow and steady, with lots of pauses. We never force him to finish a feed either. I think I read that bf babies are better at regulating their intake.

DP and I were able to go out last Friday evening while a friend looked after DS and gave him a bottlebottle, something I never thought possible 6 weeks ago. Good luck! Smile
