Green poo in EBF baby

My little boy is 4 weeks old & I have noticed a couple of nappies have contained green coloured poo not mustard brown. Does this mean he is not feeding correctly?

I do one breast per feed & a feed can take between 40 mins to an hour. He is putting on weight very well (6lb in the past week, 5lb the week previous). I do have to wind him well as we have had a few occasions with trapped wind. He generally feeds every 3 hours but I do comfort feed as & when required. I am also on iron tablets.

Is this normal?

Thanks xx

Thanks Ruby! If you don't mind me asking Did she have trapped wind or colic?
Panic has set in as my MIL is here & she was told in her day if they did green poos to contact the doctor. Cue anxiety and bad mum feeling :(

He put on 6lb in a week??!!
:o

My DS1 sometimes did green poo. I never found any pattern or cause or explanation.

I think as long as weight gain is good, baby is satisfied and lots of wee and poo you are generally ok. Every 3 hrs at 4 weeks sounds like he is contented.

My Ds was ebf and had green poo from 2 weeks to 18 weeks. Nothing wrong with him he put on weight fine. GP said a slightly immature bowel so things just going through him too fast really. He fed a lot and pooed a lot but he was fine.
Another baby in our baby group had green poo and turned out she was lactose intolerant but she really struggled to put on weight.

Some babies just have green poo and it doesn't mean anything.

My DD also has gone through phases of greenish poos, and my DM also decided to make "helpful" comments that made me feel homicidal lousy. She is a very windy baby, but has had no problems with weight gain and feeds well.

Thanks ladies for your responses & not making me feel like a lousy mum!

Having spoken to a breast feeding counsellor it's likely to be the iron tablets that I am on. Will monitor it once I am off them.

Have a google on foremilk and hindmilk imbalance... this can cause green poos.

Basically when the baby gets too much sugary foremilk they can't process all the lactose as it passes through their bowel so quickly. It also causes excess wind.

You can try block feeding ( use the same boob for 2-3 hours) to ensure the baby gets enough higher calorie hindmilk.

Good luck!
