Breastfed baby being sick

My 6week old DS is ebf and has been really sick after every feed today, starting at 3am this morning. He's not usually a sticky baby and this is a lot of sick, I know that it always seems more than it is, but this seems like the whole feed. At the moment he is still producing wet and dirty nappies. The health visitor advised that if he's pooing and weeing to just keep an eye in him and keep feeding. My question is, should I try to fed him little and often, which would mean waking him and then settling him again, or do I just feed on his cues as much as he wants and prepare for us both to be covered in vomit? He even seems to be retching in his sleep Sad

Breast milk is the best thing for him as it will nourish hydrate and help settle his tummy. Keep feeding him as much as normal. Keep an eye on nappies as hv said. If you're at all worried call the gp or go to a&e. They'd rather be safe than sorry.

Ah my 6 week old started doing this as well, but more at 3 weeks. My HV said to put a book or something under the head of her mattress or Moses basket to raise her head, which will help a bit with the sleepy voms.
If you want to feed little & often you could try a dreamfeed instead of waking your baby up each time?
Good luck & don't hesitate to call someone if you're worried.

Thanks to you both. He just wanted to feed again, 30 mins after being sick so i guess he's answered my question! Dr in the morning I think...

Ok, so now he is feeding, just not much at al. Should I pump in order to maintain my supply?? Have worked so hard to get to this point, would hate for it all to go wrong.

Pumping can mess with your supply. Let him feed as much or little as he wants. Just keep an eye on him, offer both breasts each feed and see the gp today just to make sure.

Have you eaten anything new/different??

Some things can get through to the breast milk and cause problems, especially if the child has anti-bodies to them.

My wife had to give up dairy while feeding due to our daughters milk allergies.

gentlegiant I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary, in fact I had the worlds blandest dinner before he started being sick!
We went to the dr this morning - they reckon he's got a tummy bug, but it seems that some milk is staying in as he's not dehydrated. So we will keep an eye and make sure he's ok over the weekend. Thanks thisisme I pumped once this morning as my boob was hard from him not feeding there but I haven't pumped again. He's actually eaten lots - just thrown it back! Am hoping its a 48 hour thing as we are running out of clothes. Thanks all for reading and commenting. It's so scary when they are so small.

Hope he's over it as soon as possible! You're doing great Thanks shame about the washing though isnt it?!

Keep a VERY close eye on how much stays down, they can dehydrate very quickly at that age; my son was 18 months old when he had a similar issue; after 12 hours of keeping virtually nothing down the doc had him in hospital and on a drip. The child in the next bed had the same problem, but her parents had left it nearly 2 days and she was in a very bad way.
When older, flat cola can be used for hydration, the hydration solutions the hospital prescribe taste so bad my son wouldnt touch them.
