Thrush

In the last couple of days (I'm on antibiotics) when my baby latches and starts sucking about 10 seconds later I get a dragging type pain in both boobs. It only lasts 2 seconds or so and then it's gone. I wondered if it's what's referred to as let down? However baby is 4 weeks and I've only just started feeling it. Breastfeeds/boobs are otherwise problem free and pain free.

I just googled out of interest and started seeing lots of stuff about thrush. Baby does have a white tongue but I just assumed this was from drinking a lot of milk? Is that a symptom?

I've started taking acidophilus as a precaution to not get down below thrush from the antibiotics.

Does anyone have any experience of nipple/mouth thrush? Could it be that?

Hi you might find this useful to help you work out if it is thrush.
I had it a few months ago - the dragging pain you describe is exactly how I felt.
And yes the white mouth could be a symtomI took my DS to GP and was told the white mouth was just milk but sure enough I then started getting symptoms.
Have a read -
www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/dibm/Thrush_and_Breastfeeding_Feb_2013.pdf

My advice would be to take this paper with you if you go to the GP as there seems to be a lot of conflicting info about the right treatment.

Good luck

Thrush is pretty bloody sore - if it's just a quick pain I think it's more likely to be let down. Get your little ones mouth checked though

whistlingdixie · 27/11/2013 20:07

I have the same symptom. Thought it was blocked duct being cleared but it's persisted. I also have sharp stabbing pains inside nipple and burning itchiness on outside. Nipple is glassy pink. HV told me today that it's thrush :-/

LO doesn't seem to have it.

Can I keep BF from affected breast?

(Will read your link / google too but just wanted info & re-assurance here too Blush)

Liveinthepresent · 28/11/2013 00:06

Yes keep BF but don't store expressed milk as can reinfect.
The link is very thorough.

I've got it at the moment, nipples feel like someone is blowing cold air on them all the time, like an ice burn. Feeding is excruciating. boobs have a cold burny stabbing pain which lasts an hour after feeding. Its on both sides. HV said these are the classic symptoms of nipple & deep breast thrush. Hth.

whistlingdixie · 28/11/2013 11:39

Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

Having read the link provided above, I think the HV may be wrong. I meet almost all the criteria for not diagnosing thrush even though most of my symptoms indicate thrush.

Will go to BF support group tomorrow and will phone doc for verbal consultation to see what he thinks.

whistlingdixie · 28/11/2013 20:10

Hmmm spoke to Doc today. His view is that thrush is the new trend and is being over diagnosed. When he heard my symptoms & circumstances, he said that actually it's highly probable that I do have thrush but that it's not worth prescribing anything to treat it (baby doesn't have it yet but I would have to treat baby and me with strong meds) and that it would clear up on its own. I could take paracetamol to manage the pain... Hmm

Off to google how long it will take and what I can do myself / get OTC. If I can't manage it by the end of the weekend, I'm going to have a whole different conversation with the GP... I'll suggest he pokes himself in the nipples with a needle every 15mins and see how long he thinks he can take it!!! Angry

crikeybadger · 28/11/2013 21:01

Whistling, it's true that thrush is often over disgnosed but if you do have it then I'm not sure it will go away without medication. You'll need to treat you and your baby too otherwise you'll just keep infecting each other.

Perhaps give the Breastfeeding Network helpline a call to discuss a bit more?

Liveinthepresent · 28/11/2013 22:12

Whistling I agree totally with crikey I think it will need treating. I don't think the meds have any negative effect even if they weren't necessary - this is what I was told anyway.
You are in pain - I would go back to GP.
My male GP clearly thought my symptoms were a latch issue until I said it was my second DC.
Actually you may be able to get the Daktarin over the counter but I am not sure.
Don't tolerate it if its really painful - mine was getting better within about 24 hours of starting treatment.

Sorry for not replying sooner! Thanks for your support.

I spoke with a friend who is a doctor and she got some creams for us which have made a big difference :-)
