Taking a bottle of EBM out for day - advice please

If I have a bottle of EBM pumped yesterday in my fridge, can I take it out with me to use later today? We are going to an event where it might be hard to breastfeed all feeds so I want to take a bottle just in case. If I take the bottle from the fridge, can it just stay at room temperature in the change bag until I need to use it which could be up to 5/6 hours later?

I got myself one of these: www.koo-di.co.uk/fridgetogo
It is a mini coolbag with ice-packs that keeps the temperature below 5°C for up to 8 hours. I find it really useful.
I think EBM is okay when taken out the fridge as long as you use it within 3 or 4 hours - I may be wrong though.

I used a cool bag with ice packs and used within 24 hours if not frozen, just kept refrigerated.

I've often heard quoted the rule of 4's:
4 hours at room temp
4 days in the fridge
4 months in a proper freezer
So I probably wouldn't like to give it more than 4 hours after I took it out of the fridge tbh, unless in a proper cool box with ice packs etc then maybe I'd go to 6 or 7 hours perhaps. (disclaimer: I am a bit of a worrier and tend to always err on the side of caution with these things)

We were given a leaflet with times and it said 6 hours at room temperature, I would put it in a cool box to be safe though.

MigGril · 21/11/2013 06:04

it's actually, 6hours room temp, 8 days fridge under 4c and 6months in the freezer. full info hear www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/leaflets-and-publications.html

I'm more intrigued by an event that might be difficult to feed at? You can feed anywhere. Take a scarf to cover modesty and feed away!

workingtitle · 21/11/2013 06:44

MigGril is right - those are the numbers a were given when I was expressing in hospital.

'a were'?! Sleep deprivation taking hold, I meant 'I was'...

AmandaCooper · 21/11/2013 07:00

I know what you mean OP. I also found some events awkward to feed at and took EBM along in a bottle just in case - and I am completely of the 'just whip 'em out' persuasion.

Six hours at room temperature is the measure I used - but if you have an ice pack, use it. You always have your boobs as backup.

I just used an ice pack held against the bottle by a tea towel, and popped it in a padded make up bag. It was still perfectly chilled 6 hours later.

It didn't make sense to buy special kit as it was only every blue moon I needed to take a bottle of bm out.

Thanks everyone. I will keep it cool; must have an ice pack lurking in freezer.
I would usually not worry at all about feeding. It's a funeral and I'm wearing a ridiculously impractical dress that is quite high-necked. Only access to boobs is to lift the whole dress up and go in that way! Not sure how well that will go down in church and then in the Working Mens Club. Pretty sure they won't have a John Lewis style amily room Wink.
Have planned a few feeding stops in car, but just wanted a back up.

I always put it in a cool bag. It's so cold at the moment could you put it outside or leave it in the car?
