Ds3 had his tongue snipped today and now refusing to breastfeed

Ds3 is 12 weeks old, 13 on Saturday.
Had his tongue snipped when he was 2 weeks old, but it appears that eithe the first snip wasnt cut back far enough or it has rejoined up.
A different lactation consultant has said today he has posterior tt and he's been snipped again.
His feeding has always been very shallow and frequent and he drops off a lot.
Anyway, since the second snip today, he is struggling to latch on, I guess because its sore, poor thing Sad. He's fed a couple of times, but its taken ages to get him latched on and he is quite unsettled.
I'm alternating cal pol and nurofen as he is now 3 months and 14lbs.
I just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar and if so, what helped. This breast refusal didn't happen last time. Thanks so much

He's just woken up and latched on, very sleepily

DS1 fed OK for about 12 hrs after his tt had been divided, but that night was horrible.
I ended up hand expressing, and DH fed him off a spoon (didn't really work!).
In the end it was either him learning to latch again, or sore, because we just took to bed, and had loads of skin to skin. He then latched himself on again, and we didn't stop for another year. I did wonder what I'd done that night tho!

Thanks next phase. Exactly how I feel, I was in two minds whether to snip, as feeding has gotten better over last couple of months. But his frequent feeding, windiness, fear of long term problems all made me do it one more time whilst he is still young. Really hope I've done the right thing. The consultant lady said okay h was still tied and showed me where he was joined.

Did you do stretch exercises? The consultant today said they don't advocate it, because it hasn't been proven to help, that I can cause more breastfeeding problems and because of risk of infection. Really hope it doesnt join up again!

We weren't shown any stretching exercises with DS1 or DS2 (same hospital, different consultant), so no, we didn't do them.

I'm glad we did it - so much so, even before DS2 had feeding problems, we had the referral for tt division - midwife did the checks, told me he was fine (boy, 10 fingers, 10 toes etc), and looked a bit shocked when I asked if he was tied. The answer was yes, and the referral went in that afternoon! I'm not sure DS2's would have needed snipping (wouldn't have done anything if he was pfb), but it wasn't til after it was snipped he started piling on the weight, and regained birth weight, which we were on continued mw visits for.

You've tried your best, done everything you can. Its up to DS now!

Thanksnextphase.
I feel like I've put him through it twice now. If it regrows, then it's him trying to tell me something!

It'll heal so fast - I'm sure he'll be feeding fine very soon and he'll discover that it's easier.

My DS was 6 months when his was snipped. I'd stuck with painful feeding and couldn't believe the difference it made! No-one else would believe that he needed it doing, but I'd persisted. He stopped twice-daily projectile vomiting because he was now not full of wind and I was suddenly pain free.

sheeplikessleep · 20/11/2013 21:05

iLove the wind has been ridiculous, he rivals DH (which is saying something).
6 months must be tough, I've found it harder today at 3 months, than when he was 2 weeks. His cry afterwards broke me heart, took him about half an hour to stop sobbing Sad
I hope he s better soon and he feeds better. I am glad I got it done though.

Going through this right now. DS had his snipped on day five and has refused the breast since then (he's 2 and 1/2 weeks now). Been pumping every three hours, doing skin to skin and offering the boob as well as cranial osteopathy and it was all seeming a bit hopeless... Until yesterday! Got him latched on four times for good feeds. I can't believe it! He's been back on the bottle for the night as he threw a strop, but hoping this is the turning of the tide.

How are both getting on now puddleduck and sheep?

sheeplikessleep · 24/11/2013 21:43

Hi. Ds3 is doing much better now, turning point was Friday pm, 48 hours after snip. Back to feeding happily and not getting upset when trying to latch on. I think his mouth was sore to suck :(

Now I just need him to nap at some point in the daytime ;)
