Manual vs electric pump

Hi I'm looking for some help.

My electric tommee tippie pump broke after 3 uses and I am currently pursuing a refund as it was useless any way.

I have now started pondering as to what pump to buy next and whether or not to spend a small fortune on a madela swing due to its popularity or maybe buy just a manual.

I need to pump enough for a 1 month old to go for 3 hours, 3 days a week. With the opportunity to pump more in the event of a night out (in the future)

Any reccomendations. I'm a bit lost.

If you're planning on pumping for any length of time it's worth getting a double electric. Definitely not a manual unless I've misread! I recommend my Ameda lactaline to everyone. It's efficient, inexpensive, super reliable and closed system so can be resold safely.

and get a hands free pumping bra to go with it. Mine arrived today and i've gone from hating every second of pumping, to rather enjoying the excuse to sit down and browse the web. And you do sort of need an excuse, when the housework is piling up how can you justify 20 minutes of minesweep- but then if you're tied to a pump there's nothing else you could be doing anyway...

I've been trying out a MAM manual one this week as I wanted something compact to go in my bag if I'm out which is great for occasional use, but then I got out my medela swing this afternoon (haven't used it in a few weeks) and realised how much more efficient and comfortable it is to manuals.

I also have the Tommee Tippee manual but don't like it as I end up soaked from the big breast shield plus I always feel as though my nipple is going to be chopped off by the pump!

i have the ameda lactaline too - i think its brill well worth money

I have the medela swing and I love it.
I had a manual philips avent one before and it was useless. (At least In my case)

Oooh interesting. Nice to see some alternatives to the madela I'll have a little research. I know each persons experience varies but how much do the electric ones produce in say 20mins.

My Tt one's first use produced a full 150ml bottle in about 40 mins but the next two uses over an hour of pumping and only produced 15 ml. My supply is good

Medela is great, I could easily get 100ml+ in 20 mins and maintained supply during a few weeks when I had to pump exclusively.

Hand pumps are fine but only if you want to pump very rarely!

Sunnysummer · 19/11/2013 03:06

(And the Medela pump I have is a single!)

NomDeClavier · 19/11/2013 10:11

20mins for me at about that age would have given me nearly 2 full bottles (with a double). I can't remember off hand whether they're 6 or 8oz bottles. Later I had to decant half way through. Admittedly I have massive oversupply but if you can trigger let down the suction is very, very effective.

When you're having a look do read this on open/closed system. Yes it's a blog but she takes a pump apart and it's really enlightening.

I get about 260ml a day over 7 puming sessions (one in the middle of the night) with my lactaline but thats way more than i got before. (thought id chip in with the other extreme so your not upset if you don't fill a bottle. :)

I've been using an avent manual & getting very frustrated because not only does it make me sore, it also leaks milk unless you lean right forward to use it (sort of like rodins thinker!). My friend lent me her medela swing & I cant believe how much more comfortable & efficient it is. Cant comment on other makes but I definitely wouldnt go for a manual!
