it seems that i have thrush on/in my breasts and dd has it in her mouth i've been given antifungal cream for both of us is there anything else other than the cream that can help to get rid of/prevent it?

I was given some pills and a cream for my nipples IIRC.

may sound mad. my home made remedy for thrush is 1/2 and 1/2 vinegar and water dabbed on with a cloth. if the skin is broken it will sting a bit.

Read this and if necessary print it off and show it to your GP if they are unwilling to prescribe anything. If the thrush is inside the milk ducts you really need Flucanazole tablets.

daisyartichoke · 11/07/2006 21:15

thanks for advice, i was prescribed flucanazole tablets by doctor but then when i cashed the prescription the pharmacist said i wouldn't be able to breastfeed whilst taking them. Has anyone taken these whist BF?

Yes Daisy.
It's been discussed at great length on MN.
You can take it while b/feeding 9as loads of us have)
Tell him it's for your fanny if he asks.

Tatties · 11/07/2006 22:00

I've taken them, my GP wasn't sure at first but did a bit of research and confirmed that it was ok.

whatamess · 11/07/2006 22:10

DO take it - and make sure it's the full recommended dose. I had Thrush while bf for about 3 months and still have the scars to show for it because my doctor wouldn't give me the full dose.

If you struggle to get rid of it there's an anti thrush diet - basically nothing with yeast, sugar, diary, and various other things. It's what got rid of mine in the end. I can find the details if you want.

Hope it goes soon,

the thing that helped me was dakatrin oral gel - just wash breasts after feeding and apply the gel - doesn't need to be washed off for the next feed. The gp prescribed drops for the baby - am sure hte oral gel helped. Once I started applying the gel the pain went in no time.

Daisy,I had faffed with diet and gels and creams for a while (in absolute agony) and was already eating very healthy diet with live plain yoghurt every day.

Fluconazole was the only thing that zapped it 9within 48 hours) and frankly, made life worth living again.
I remember walking hunched over as the feel of my shirt against my nipples was torture.
Such a miserable time.

kayzed: go to the chemist and ask for it. it is sold without a prescription - an insult if you can get free prescriptions tho!
