Could this be an allergy?

DD has always been fussy she will never take more than 4oz and that's a struggle... Cries...spits it out...turns head away. She has suffered terrible with wind and I can always hear her tummy bubbling away. She has very offensive smelling mucus cottage cheese like nappies and anywhere between 4-6 aday. She had been slow to gain weight only gaining 1-3oz a week. I have taken her back and forth to GP who first thought reflux and we started gaviscon and ranitidine which don't seem to have made any difference and now the GP thinks it may be a milk allergy?! Do these sound common symptoms? Surely would this not have been picked up earlier? I'm so stressed out worrying I feel awful ?? any advice would be lovely

Hello! Both my children (1 and 2 years old) have food allergies/intolerances. My oldest (my son) wasn't diagnosed until 15months old after repeated hospital admissions as there was so much vomiting and diahorrehea he'd get very dehydrated and need rehydration therapy- despite me constantly taking him to GP. He and my daughter were both doing 20+ explosive diahorreheary nappies a day and huge amounts of forceful vomiting. Some nappies were very foul smelling and sticky. Although both put good amounts weight on steadily which confused everyone! We did the whole ranitidine, graviscon and onmperzole (sorry can't spell!!) thing as well.
You say you are breast and bottle feeding- have you been advised on your diet in any way?? I had really good instruction (eventually!) as to what I was eating was aparantky going into my milk and making them ill and what to do about it. Have you been advised on formula?? Both mine were moved onto Neocate LCP and now they're over one onto Neocate Active for toddlers. Both have more than just milk allergies- we are gluten, wheat, dairy, egg. Fish, nut and soya free!!!! Arghhhhhh!!!!!
Do you know if it's a lactose intolerance (the sugar part of the milk) or a milk protein allergy?? If not you can ask.
Trust your instincts (as I did) and if you feel you are not happy keep going back. I can't even begin to imagine how many visits I made until I got the help I was happy with.
Is you HV contactable?? They are fab and can do referrals. A dietician can give you advice on if you need to make changes to your own diet and indeed if special formula is required. I had to be referred through GP and hospital.
Both children had some tests done to determine what was going on- ranging from frozen stool sample testing to see if it was a milk sugar issue, to a blood test and skin prick tests once 12months plus. I even presented a Dr with a nappy just to show how horrendous they were and took photos to show them as some were odd green colour like spinach.
Please PM me if I can be of any help. Obviously I'm not a medical professional and can't offer any advice for your daughter but I can share my experiences with you and give you some ideas of things to address with your GP etc.
and please don't let this spoil such a special time with your little one- you've done all the right things going to your GP with your concerns about the nappies and the weight gain. I don't often post on mumsnet but this struck such a chord with me I wanted to let you know you're not alone! Smile

Thanks for the advice Smile it's nice to know I'm not the only going through this! I've been back to the GP today who did an urgent referral to the hospital and now have an appointment for next week. Hopefully it's something as simple as an allergy, just want to put my mind at rest and like you say start to enjoy her rather than the constant worry.

Oh that's fantastic news they are seeing you so quick. My advice is to take your red book with you and really wave it at then to highlight your weight gain concerns. Also write a list of questions you have and literally go through them one by one- if anything like me you'll forget half the stuff you wanted to ask!!
I also found jotting down what they said while in the appointments really helps as they give you so much info you come away not knowing/remembering what was said.
Plus if it's fresh take a soiled nappy to show them or take a photo!! Sounds gross but it's helpful!!
Good luck x
