When BF my DS was known to be seen in pub garden on particualrly sunny afternoon with glass of wine in hand and baby on boob! Think I ahd a glass of wine most nights after putting DS to bed and was told by my MW/ BF counsellor it was OK. I was told the amount of alcohol passedthrough the milk was V V small and that it was more likely to cause a problem with my supply (not an issue I had)

God I loved that dazed feeling of sitting there with a baby to breast and a great big glass of Claret to hand.
If only I could have that again..
No time to sit around drinking wine these days.

I drink while breastfeeding but figure if I get to the point of 'feeling' the effects of the alcohol then I need to stop! Anyway, the thought of a hangover and 2 kids the next day just fills me with dread so have never got that far!!!!!!

One way to increase the rate of breastfeeding in the UK IMO is to stop this myth that women have to change what they eat and drink to breastfeed. As long you don't feel the effects of alcohol I would feed when the baby wants to.

I still remember that ecstatic first post-natal G&T, after nine months of no spirits (I did drink some wine in pregnancy). I sent an email to my best mate who still remembers the sheer sensual joy of it.

And then I fed Dd1.

I remember Tiktok making the point ages ago (at least I think it was Tiktok) that not being able to drink/lead a normal life can make people more likely to stop BF. Since than I have been much more relaxed about the occasional glass of wine before (or when dd unexpectedly wakes up, during) a feed. It has made me much more relaxed about bf, as I feel a bit more normal. (am concidering switching back to wonderbras too now that DD is nearly 7 months old and feeds are (a little) more predictable!!!

im glad this thread has come up again as i have been concerned about this, especially now that hubby is on school hols and i would like to enjoy the odd glass of wine at lunchtime but cant do so without feeling guilty about it. i have been researching this on the net and although the advice as tiktok has said is to wait until the alcohol has been cleared from the blood before feeding, a few websites have said that the experts dont really know enough on this yet and what the long term effects are so the general advice is not to drink at all because alcohol has been linked to motor development problems in infants. have they done research about this tiktok? what are the short term effects you refer to about babies who are fed whilst their mums are 3 times over the legal limit? (not that i have ever had this much and fed, i am a lightweight!).

milkmummy - if you want until the alcohol has cleared from your blood until you bf, then that is the same as not drinking at all. It is a physiological fact.

Kellymom says : Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.

More inof here

sazzybee · 22/07/2007 21:49

info even. And I'm stone cold sober

tiktok · 22/07/2007 23:55

milkmummy, babies who experience the effects of their mothers drinking mahoosive amounts will be sleepy and hard to rouse....but no one that drunk should be in charge of a baby's care anyway.

If it bothers you to drink a glass of wine with your lunch, then wait until your body has processed the alcohol before feeding your baby.

Personally, I don't think it is worth bothering to do this, but this is a choice that's up to you
