Milk - when to give up completely?

At what age should a child drink milk up to ?? DD is just over 3 yrs and still drinks milk everyday. However my nephew gave up drinking milk completely by the time he was 18 months.

My two are 10 and 7 and still drink milk. They usually have a glass of milk before they go to bed - this is sometimes warmed or taken as hot chocolate. My ds, especially, often gets himself a glass of milk when he returns from playing sport. My friend's ds absolutley hates milk - and will not drink any. I think it is one of those things, some kids like it and some kids don't.

My 2 year old dd hasn't had a drink of milk since she was 12 months and stopped bf (she self-weaned).

Agree with Jaybee, depends on if they like it or not

Think it depends on the child and whether they actually like it as a drink (I didn't but my db drank pints).

ds stopped it at about 3.5 after a tummy upset. He was never really into it anyway. dd (2.5) has had varying interest - until last summer she had very little but since then she has at least 3 or 4 100mls per day, plus yoghurts etc. Friend's kids are still having it am and pm at almost 6 and 3 - still formula too.

mine all seemed to go off it at around 2 but then I gave them milkshakes, which they liked, rather than let them stop drinking it. The health visitor said she didn't like the idea of milkshakes because it was bad for their teeth but I figured they were better of having it than not, and just made sure I brushed their teeth propertly. By 4-5 they started drinking milk alone again - after I gradually decreased the amount of milkshake mix in it until they no longer noticed.

My DS1 stopped drinking milk regularly at 3 1/2. I was advised by HV to stop him as he was drinking about 10 ounces just before bed and she felt he would never be dry at night if we continued, he has a drink of milk at nursery and will occasionally ask for milk to drink at home. My DS2 however b/fed until 16 months when he self-weaned and has not drunk milk since.

Milk is an important source of calcium (though there are others). 7-10 yr olds need to aim for about a pint of milk a day, or the equivalent. Older girls need more, and older boys even more still.

If they will not drink cow's milk (mine both refused) you need to make sure they are getting adequate calcium in other forms - yoghurt, cheese, milk on cereal and in cooking.

I have an excellent leaflet from my school nurse, published by the National Dairy Council, which is very helpful for monitoring the amount of calcium in your diet.
