4 day old DS rejecting left breast

For the first three days DS latched well on both breasts, and was happy with either, so I don't think positioning is a problem.
Yesterday my milk came in and at first he fed fine still, but very quickly started fussing and refusing my left breast. Both got quite big, but he still managed fine on the right side.
Today my left was so engorged that I was in tears and have twice had to express some milk out of it just to take the pressure off, but even when I've taken some out so it looks more manageable to him, IYSWIM, he just flat out refuses.
I'm starting to get a bit tearful about it, as I'm worried that he's not getting enough to eat. I keep trying to put him on the left breast but he just stresses and then goes to sleep, and he doesn't seem to feed very long on the right before he dozes off either.
Is there anything I can do to re-interest him in the left?
And will having to express some mess with my supply?
Also, should I wake him more to feed, or is that not necessary?

Thanks for reading all that :)

Have you tried changing his position so he thinks he is on the right? So keep him facing as if he is on the right but move him over? Or the under the arm hold?

No real advice but I have just about exclusively fed 7 month dd from one boob after I could never get her latched on properly on one side. She is can chunk of squishable gorgeousness so it doesn't seem to have done her any harm!

RedlipsAndSlippers · 29/10/2013 19:51

Primal Yeah I've tried that, especially when he's being sleepy (thinking I may fool him) but no luck Sad
Bloodysocks Glad to hear it can work, do you express from the other? Or is there just no supply that side now?

Thank you both for replying :)

DD only feeds from the left, I still have milk in the right boob but she rarely latches. To start with I hand expressed to relieve the pain in that side, now I don't have any prob with it.

She only latches on the right when my period is due so I presume due to the hormone changes it must alter the taste / let down speed. I know when that's coming a she refuses the left side.

Riggin has your DD always been left only? Nice to know the pain stops if the situation continues!

Oops, meant Rigglin of course!

She's always shown a preference, I think from the second or third week she decided the left was for her.

Will add for other reasons we combi feed, and have done so from about 4weeks.

My 6 week old dd was the same, she refused both boobs for the first 24 hours then only the right one for a few days. After a few days I expressed everything I could from the left breast. This meant my nipple was less flat for her to latch on to.

She then started latching on, but not very well. I go to a breast feeding group who have helped with techniques for the latch, but even now it's hit and miss. I don't worry about it though because I know she is gaining weight.

The worst thing I did was once she was latched on poorly I left her because she was getting milk and I was able to feed from both sides. This resulted in a very sore nipple, so ask for help sooner than I did Smile

Have a look at Kellymom - sorry, can't post link as on my phone. There's great advice in dealing with one side preference - my DS did this and I ended up a cup size bigger on the preferred side after I stopped feeding. Trying to rebalance myself this time!

Thanks all for your replies!
Went for 6 day check today and LO has gained 200g in three days!
That plus knowing that it worked for you guys means I'm no longer worrying :)

You could try a cranial osteopath. My chiropractor helped a little with DS' strong preference for the right. Didn't completely work tho, nine mo on I'm now only feeding from the right and left has dried up :)
