How to use a pump

Sounds like a stupid question: ds is now 7wk and I am starting to try express some milk for him to get used to bottle as well as emergency, I am ill, for example.

I have a Mother Care hand pump. I have noticed that my milk comes out not only from nipples but the dark area as well. Everytime I try pump, my skin "glue" to the pump and v. tricky to take the cup off (painful as well).

Any tips, or I am doing it all wrong? I've searched a bit but no one seem to have the same problem. Would an electic pump be better? Thx for any advice.

Sorry last meg not logical: I meant how to use a pump that does not stick to breast...

Unsure what you mean, but if it's similar to the suction you get from your baby's latch, you could slide a finger down the side of the pump to release the pressure.

ditto bramblina. tbh i tried a hand pump and failed miserable. thsn bought an electric one and it was marvellous

bramblina, I meant the skin of my breast, in particular the areola sticks onto the cup of the pumb. It is quite painful to take the suction off.

Sorry previous post was not clear, was about to go out to doctor with ds a bit anxious...

I have an avent pump so not familiar with your variety. Sounds like one hell of a good suction!

Or perhaps the shape of the cup does not suit my breast shape. Just had look at Avent and Medela, even Tommy Timee pump. There are either holes or little pool in the cup, maybe that helps. I'll have to go out and look at one.
I've put tissue over the nipple area, that just wet and wasted a lot of milk...

could you try rubbing vasiline onto areola before you start with pump?

i vaguely remembering this happening to me think it common could try different pump? sorry not much help

make sure that you position the cup of the pump with the nipple exactly in the middle - alternatively, use a very small amount of nipple cream around the edge of the areola and that may help and shouldn't affect the milk - try and use your finger to break the suction as brambalina suggested rather than trying to pull the pump off to break the suction.

Thanks for all the advice. I've just been prescribed antibio due to some fresh bleeding, so have to try when I stop the drug. We are consider to get an electric one for more frequent use when I go back to work.
