I keep trying to bf with one hand but dd seems to keep slipping of or loosing her latch on and hurting me unless I hold her head and my boob , I have a toddler and it wud b a life saver to bf one handed I have managed to do it a couple of times but worried about her getting wind what is the best technique I can practise

I have always laid DD on a pillow rather than holding her, even as a newborn. Saves your arms getting knackered too! You'll find a way to arrange yourself that's best for both of you, its just a matter of practice/trial and error Smile

V pillow, I'm mumsnetting right now, eating a toasted Tea cake & feeding. Both hands free.

Got mine in Ikea & a pillow case. Very good.

I hold my baby so that her head is resting in the crook of my elbow and my hand is under her bum. If I need to adjust the latch I do it with my other ARM, but once she is latched on I don't find I need to hold on to my boob so that arm is free.

I can't find a non-fuzzy picture on Google, sorry,

What age is your dd? I find it hard to do one handed before about 3 weeks. Then they are less floppy and more effective and it takes less work to keep them on. I use a my brest friend pillow at night in bed but daytime just a comfy chair allows one handed feeding

rockyroadahead · 26/10/2013 14:31

smaths .. dd is exactly 3 weeks so that cud b why I am finding it difficult ..

tewi.. I tried the crook of the arm and it sort of worked for a bit but she came kept slipping to the end of my nipple and I was worried about wind , but may this is another thing that will improve as she strengthens !

V pillow!!! I used to take mine everywhere! X

The only way I can do it without using both hands is lying down on the bed, because then I don't need to hold him, but I still need to hold my own boob up. Might be because they're a bit saggy now, but if I don't hold my boob up when feeding, then I run the risk of blockage on the underside, which is bloody painful and unnecessary. DS2 is 1 now and it's still an issue.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 26/10/2013 14:39

Is she getting a good latch to start with? That might explain the slipping...

rockyroadahead · 26/10/2013 14:47

I have checked with a few midwives and HV's and all say latch on is fine .. but she tends to get a really good latch on suck for a bit then start slipping to the end especially if I don't hold onto my boob

Could a sling work? I've heard of sling clubs where you can try them out - planning on investigating.
Does anyone know of a good sling for feeding?

I couldn't do it with a tiny baby, give it a couple of weeks and you'll get there I would think!

I use a widgey BFing pillow in my side and hold ds in the rugby ball hold with one arm under his head, body on the pillow with his tummy against my ribs. Then I have the other hand free. it's the only way I can feed him with the right boob. He's 3 weeks.

hettienne · 26/10/2013 22:15

I couldn't do it with a newborn. By 6 weeks or so DS could latch himself on though.
