Teary and desperate - problems following tongue tie snipping

8 week old ds had tongue tie snipped this morning. Have ebf since birth despite some pain. Tongue tie was spotted in hospital but they felt it was not affecting feeding. He has been having increasing problems with symptoms of reflex and my GP felt that his tongue tie may be contributing to this.
He is now having problems latching and is becoming very upset at my attempts to get him latched. He fed at the hospital with no problems and has fed from my left breast since I got home but will not latch on my right breast at all. Have the breast pump etc. in Milton but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When my dc had his tt snipped, he was very fussy and unsettled for a couple of days after.
I was advised to give him a small dose of calpol.
I also had regular baths with him - skin to skin, used candles instead of the bright light, so it was very calm for him.
I think I also went to bed with him - again skin to skin.
The latch took a bit of getting right, but it was easier once he (and I) relaxed.

Sorry - at 8 weeks he may be too young for calpol.
Try relaxing him first, if still no joy, ring your GP and ask about calpol.

hi op. can you getting any real life help from a lactation consultant?
in the mean time what worked for me was going back to basics, as previous poster suggested a bath with baby and then into bed, top off, nice and cosy. if u search for laid back breastfeeding or biological nuturing position its super for helping get a good latch after division.

My DS was a bit fussy for a while too. Remember that not only is it probably a bit sore, but the tongue now has a whole new range of movement it didn't have before so your DS basically has to relearn how to use his tongue- and therefore how to feed! Try not to worry too much- hopefully this is the road to easier feeding. But yy to skin to skin and relaxing as much as possible. Also worth trying some different positions: don't assume that what worked pre snip is best now (or that what didn't work still won't!) I could only do rugby ball one side pre snip: post snip he wouldn't latch that way at all!

I don't Have any specific experience of tongue tie but You could also try a Rugby Ball hold on the right. Dd wouldn't latch well on the right for ages but I tricked her into it by doing this.

Ds2 was fussy for a couple of days. Could be that.
That was the second time he was snipped.
First time it didn't work, wasn't done deep enough. Not all doctors do it properly. Just warning you.

Thanks for the replies - good news is that he's feeding on both sides now, bad news is that it's painful on right side. Will take the advice given and hope that things improve.
