newborn sickness bug ebf

my 8 week old has caught the sickness bug that we've all had the last few days.

I know you are supposed to continue to ebf on demand but she keeps demanding it and chucking it back up. I've resorted to DJ's PJs and the washing pile is high.

should I try to hold her of say for 30mins after each sickness or just be grateful that some might be sticking in there. (although just then if came up within 5 mins so is not really sticking at all)

thanks

Just carry on feeding on demand. If you can get extra water down I would also try that. Some milk stays down despite all the vomiting. If you run empty I would use any spare you have in your freezer or use formula.

The advice is to carry on feeding regardless of the vomiting. She should have frequent wet nappies (the easiest way to check for dehydration). If she is dry for longer than 4-6 hours or you are in any way concerned, see your gp.

You can't give dioralyte without a prescription for small babies.

See your HV/GP - sickness in a little baby needs a medical opinion.

Water is not normally a good idea for a baby of this age, fully bf.

DS has had many D & V bugs, including the norovirus at 8 weeks.

The boobs will be plenty, no need for water. I would feed little and often, say a couple of minutes max every 5-10 mins. There's a better chance of it staying down then.

Kellymom has some good info on how best to manage things. The main worry is obviously dehydration which you GP can check for and give you guidance on. How you're all better soon.

no intention of offering water so no worries there and no supply concerns either - thanks dd1 Smile

its dehydration I'm worried about.
she has held down the last two mini feeds but her nappy is not as wet as it should be so will encourage more mini feeding if that works. otherwise go will be called

Hope your baby is recovering now. I advised giving water in addition to breast feeds (a) because I am an ex A&E nurse and I know this is the right advice and (b) it is recommended by the NHS on the 'Choices' website.

Not giving water, juice or formula top ups is the advice for successful breast feeding but not in the case of illness.

Dioralyte is preferable in vomiting and diarrhoea but needs prescribing by a gp. If you did see your GP then I'm sure he would have prescribed this 'water+ electrolyte' solution.

thanks for the clarification - I've never heard that before.

luckily I didn't have to decide as she stopped being sick Wednesday afternoon and is now all fine.

thanks for all your advice!
