Thrush not improving

Been using daktarin gel on baby (4wks) and cream on me since last wednesday. Before that we had the drops which made no difference, were prescribed gel at her tongue tie snip. By friday I could see a difference in her tongue and less pain in me but now it's back with a vengeance and all over the roof of her mouth too. I'm trying my best with the gel though obviously it's quite hard to coat every part of a teeny baby's mouth especially when she just wants to suck it all off..
What else is there to try? Am changing breast pads, etc (cant hot wash everything as it would destroy all our clothes though). I can't bear it :( Hmm

You poor thing - it really got me down.
Take this to your GP and ask for Fluconazole tablets - sorted me out in no time.

Sorry here's the link!

As indicated in that link, the guidance re: thrush has changed recently.

They think there may be some risk to Fluconazole tablets, and think thrush has been v much over-diagnosed - it's only meant to be diagnosed by culture, not by looking at things.

Given there was a tongue tie, is it possible that bad latch is an issue here? Are your nipples misshapen after feeding?

monniemae · 20/10/2013 19:55

It's definitely thrush - it's visible all over her mouth, my nipples are being eaten away by it and feel itchy, pain on feeding (like ground glass) and shooting pains ... will visit a bfeeding cafe tomorrow but maybe we need flucanozole; not ideal but nor is thrush! Hmm

Does she have nappy rash? I had this issue with DS - mouth thrush kept improving but coming back - and it turned out his nappy rash was thrush too. Had to treat mouth, bum and nipples, along with hot washing everything/sterilising dummies to crack it. Once we did it cleared up really quickly.

Also how often are you using the gel? I seem to recall the instructions said twice a day but the HV told me to do it 4x a day.

monniemae · 20/10/2013 22:38

Thanks Hettiene. No rash at all on bum. Am trying to do gel as much as possible but it's hard as she feeds a LOT and then often falls asleep feeding. Think I only managed 3 times today. Am washing everything at 40 as my machine jumps to 60 which will ruin everything... But I could soak everything in sterilising fluid I guess.

I think you need to really hot wash all bras, muslins, sheets, cloth nappies etc - 60 degrees minimum.

NomDeClavier · 20/10/2013 22:50

Milton will kill thrush but bleach fabrics. It needs hot washing really. Towels also need doing.

monniemae · 20/10/2013 22:52

ok Confused I dont care about the muslins / cotton bras etc... but the beautiful agent provacateur nursing bra given by my best friend... ouch.
First moths ate all my favourite knitwear, now fungi is destroying my only nice mumwear. WAAH.
Still. If it saves my nipples and means I can keep bfeeding I'll have to live with it..

I had really bad thrush - still have the scars on my nipples!

What got rid of it was diet, basically an anti candida diet ( you can google) it's like a detox - no sugar, yeast, mushrooms, diary, ...

I'd tried everything including flucanazole, but it was the diet that fixed it ( recommended to me on mumsnet)

Good luck,

Make sure your bra is 100%cotton to be a breathable fabric. Wash on hot all items in contact
