Feels like this is neverending

Hi,

If I could get some advice I'd really appreciate it. My baby son is 3 weeks old today and absolutely gorgeous. On Monday he had his tongue tie cut and things started to get better, however the last couple of days it's got worse again and I'm just getting fed up.

I'm starting to suspect it might be thrush - the pain in my nipples seems worse when he's not on the breast and it's a kind of burning sensation and the odd shooting pain. However my nipples just look a bit pink - not cracked or flaky and his mouth is ok, just a little kind of creamy/yellow colouring on the roof of his mouth which doesn't look like the white stuff that's described for thrush.

Is it just a bad latch maybe? Can a latch just suddenly get worse? Esp after having tongue tie cut?

It just feels like there's always some complicating factor, the first week I had a horrible uti which left me in agony then the tongue tie diagnosis and procedure, then this iincreased nipple pain, every time I get on top of something another thing crops up.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice which might help? I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow but I'm not sure they can definitively diagnose thrush, can they? Will they know for sure what's wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice or just words of encouragement!

Piz

It is possible u have thrush baby's mouth sounds thrushy. I found doc useless in my case and I told them I had it after seeing Hv and told them I needed fluconazole which I got. If your having shooting pain I would suggest you have thrush in your ducts.

It's important to remember that thrush is a yeast that occurs naturally in the environment and on your body. Stress and diet can effect it. Too much Refined sugar in the diet and bread can exacerbate it. Exposure to sunlight and air on your nips can help and you can google many ways of helping to control it naturally but ductal thrush is a bugger and may need a longer course of treatment to get rid of.

How do your nipples look when baby latches now after tt cut? Are they round or lipstick shaped? Are u happy with the latch?

Def get thrush sorted - you need to treat baby too as u can keep passing it back but keep feeding as normal on demand...I know it's painful x

Thanks Gem, really appreciate your help. I do need to cut down on sugar, I've been going for lazy calories recently without thinking. I also had a course of antibiotics for a uti which I developed a week after the birth, which I read can make things worse.

I'm also not happy with the latch either! I think he got used to clamping down a bit to compensate when his tongue was tied so nipples come out slightly pointed and with a little ridge down each side. I've been doing tongue exercises with him shown by the lactation consultant when she cut the tongue tie which help a bit and I don't really have pain while he's feeding, just after, which is what makes me think maybe also thrush. Would a bad latch feel like that too?

Thanks again for your feedback, hope the doctor has a clue tomorrow and can help me!

A bad latch can feel exactly like that. It takes a while after the TT snip to really see a difference. It's great your doing the exercises. The TT can grow back. I had DS's done three times

Are you for to see the LC again for follow up? I would concentrate a such as possible at each feed. Take LO off and relatch as much as you need too.

Thanks nothingsleft maybe it is just the latch, then. I'm going to at least one breastfeeding drop-in next week - determined to crack it! Just can't work out where I'm going wrong, I've watched so many videos and read websites about getting it right but it gets so painful and I can't work out what makes it work or not. Doesn't help my bloody mil is here and 'helping' by shoving the back of his head as I'm trying to get a decent latch at inopportune moments.

Latching him on and off is hard too as once he's in he sucks like a limpet and clamps down when i try to unlatch him, which hurts more, then he gets distressed and throws himself about making it harder to latch him on again! Will persevere, I think I'd just hoped that getting the tongue tie done would improve things and it's just one thing after another!

I know what you mean. I didn't relatch a such as needed to in the early days for fear I would never get him back on! It's worth persisting though. If you put a finger between his gums, it should prevent him clamping too much.
