Combining BM, FF and weaning - baffled!!

DS is just over 6 months old. We started weaning about a month ago although in a fairly informal 'chuck a bit of this and that at him and see what he does' kind of way. For various reasons we've also moved his daytime feeds from BM to FF.

It was sooooo much easier when he was EBF. Just feed him whenever he fancies, and he has as much or little as he wants. Now I can SEE how much or little he is having, I'm starting to obsess about it!

So what do you think.... Very roughly speaking he is having;
730am - BF
830am - Porridge
1030am - FF - usually about 5oz
1pm - Sandwich or toast or similar
3.30pm - Ff - usually 7oz
5.30pm - Tea - vegetables and bit of meat or fish then fruit
7pm - BF (then bed)
1045pm - BF (dream feed)

So that's 3 x BF and 2 x FF plus 3 meals ( although god knows how much of his meals goes in as he is BLW so there is a lot on the floor)

I'm thinking we should maybe ditch lunch and have a bottle instead then, and that we might be pushing towards 3 meals too fast. Any ideas? I definitely preferred EBF - was much simpler! Sadly not practical now for various reasons.

Just to add, he will soon start nursery part time and they do lunch at 11.15am and tea at 330pm so ideally I'd like us to vaguely follow their routine.

And he's a big boy - 92nd centile.

If he's on the 92nd centile, is that weight or height or both?

GreatSoprendo · 16/10/2013 21:08

Sorry slow to reply - he's 92nd centile for both, so generally just big but not overweight.

It is a bit early to be on three meals, the NHS recommend moving to 3 meals between 8 and 9 months but I did. Not sure when the NHS brought that recommendation in but once we started weaning, a few years ago, dd made it pretty clear she wanted food when we ate. The only way I could get her to miss meals and feed instead was to eat while she was asleep.

To answer your question, I think the amount of bfs and ffs are fine Smile

DD is 6 months and very similar...we're doing BLW
6.30/7am BF
8am breakfast (porridge or toast)
11am about 4/5oz formula
11.30 lunch
1.30-3 BF (depends when she wakes)
5.30 up to 8oz formula (split before and after bath)
7pm BF for comfort to sleep
Tried a dream feed but either she was hard to settle or too sleepy so just feed if she wakes (usually wakes at least once overnight and I BF her).

I think if they're not happy they'll say! DD had three extra BF today, I think because she's snuffly!

Thanks Faith - that's reassuring! We did a 4oz feed late morning followed by lunch yesterday and it seemed to work out fine, so think we will start doing lunch at 1130 ish like you.
