Taking Glyceryl Trinitrate while breastfeeding

My doc has prescribed me Glyceryl Trinitrate for a rather unpleasant downstairs problem. The leaflet says don't use while bfing, the doc (and NICE guidelines) say that if I feed LO then apply cream straight away and avoid feeding again for 2 hours it's ok. This is based on one small study where women reported no obvious problems in bf infants while using the drug. So my question is: has anyone used this? What is your experience of it (and was it effective for you!)? Should I try it? I've had this problem since being pregnant, LO is now 7 months so I'm v fed up with problem, but terrified of taking anything that may impact on baby. He is on solids now and feeding less frequently (4hourly) but I'm still worried. Tia.

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT - lactmed is reassuring. Topical medication has a very hard time getting anywhere near the milk anyway :)

Your doc, the NICE guidelines and Lactmet say it's ok, so that is pretty good.

Thanks tiktok! That's a really useful link. Looks like it's probably ok I think.

I've also been prescribed this, for v unpleasant anal fissure (one of the most painful things I've experienced, including labour!). GP was happy to prescribe but, like you, I was nervous and read the same guidance to avoid bf for 1-2 hours. Dd was only 6 weeks when I started. I try to avoid bf for at least an hour, but that has sometimes been stressful. When I have fed after an hour I've not noticed any effect on dd. I feel a bit lightheaded / headachey immediately after using the cream but this passes soon. The good news is that two weeks in, I'm definitely in less pain and no longer shaking/sweating/crying during and after a bowel movement. Good luck, hope it works for you.
