hi,
my dd is 4 months and exclusively breastfed. given it's so incredibly hot, should i try giving her some boiled water too so that she at least gets the liquid she needs? i've been giving her an extra feed in the afternoon so far...

I never gave anything else when breastfeeding. I fully breastfed dd4 for a year and we had some scorchers when she was a few months old I did find she 'snacked' more which gave her the thirst quenching foremilk more often than normal.

Agree with magnolia - she shouldn't need anything in addition to breastmilk.

We went to Sardinina when dd2 was 3mths old last year and it was v. v. hot - she only had breastmilk, but I made a point of feeding her more frequently than usual.

Just breastmilk is fine. IIRC, DSs both fed more often and I suspect DD will do too.

Bm counts as a clear liquid & babies fed on demand dont need any extra water - they will get all they need from mum: You might find your lo feeds more often (& maybe has lots of shorter feeds) in hot weather. Kellymom has a good link

yes, I agree about the foremilk....just give them what they ask for.....they know what they need.

thanks! this is what i suspected. nice to have the backup. she is more or less fed on demand ie. she has set feed times but if she gets hungry earlier i feed her. kind of hard to know what to say when well-meaning relatives suggest this. was told to give her fennel tea the other day!

exclusively breastfed babies dont need anything else. but yo need to drink loads and loads so you dont dehydrate

cazboldy · 02/07/2006 16:42

yeah it is hard if someone keeps on at you, no matter how well meaning they are. My mum bottle fed us and consequently is always asking if he has had enough, just because she cant see how much he has had!
