nursing strike, anyone?

Dd2 is 13m and has a cold. She has refused the breast for 36 hours. I'm offering her a feed frequently but she just screams and pushes me away. She is settling ok at night without a feed but won't have any naps - previously she had two good naps a day following a feed. She is very tired but just won't settle.

I'm so sore but expressing isn't very effective, its like getting blood out of a stone. I wonder if this is the end of bf for us, without her feeding or me effectively expressing my supply will presumably dry up fairly soon.she drinks well from a cup so I'm not worried about that. Just sad to finish bf and a bit desperate to get her to nap.

i don't know what i want people to say really, just wondered if anyone is having or has had a similar experience?

Have you checked her temperature, ds will not feed if too hot, if she is hot i would try calpol to cool her down and strip off to a vest and nappy, or just nappy if roasting? Cant remember how old ds was when this worked but likely under a year, but i used to strip off my top half, strip him to a nappy and then standing up, rock him side to side whilst almost in position for a feed, (more like me twisting really) and this seemed to get him latched on.
If you have tried calpol, worth giving it 20/30 minutes to start working before trying a feed again.
As for "is this the end", i really dont know, but think from what i have read that if she is used to having more than a feed a day they will drop gradually rather than stop many feeds immediately, in which case is likely to be nursing strike.
Hopefully someone more knowledgable will turn up with better advice soon.
P.s keep drinking plenty, you and dd, and i would keep expressing even if with littlkele out.

Thanks redcar, yes her temperature is normal. I think it is a nursing strike, from what I've read. But it may turn out to be the end anyway, as I guess my supply will start to diminish soon. She drank over a pint of Alpro today (she is cows milk protein intolerant) so I'm not too worried about it from her point of view, its just not the gentle gradual end to bf that I had imagined. I'll keep expressing and offering her the breast and see what happens.

Oh no MadMonkeys I'm sorry.

Have you tried all the usual feeding her when she's asleep/in a steamy bathroom/just woken up/on the move? Feeding in the bath helped with DD when she stopped feeding because of a cold, although she didn't strike completely just reduced her million feeds to three or four Grin

Hope she stops striking soon. Smile

Yes, I've tried feeding her asleep, almost asleep, just woken up, every room in the house etc. She pushes me away and screams. Then if I offer her a drink in a cup she drinks it down in one go. Her nose isn't congested any more, she's barely coughing and she is generally happy in the day so I don't think there is a physical problem preventing her from feeding now.

She did nap today - I rocked her until she was almost asleep and she went in her cot with just a bit of a protest. I feel really weepy today, apparently that can happen when milk production decreases rapidly so I guess my milk is starting to dry up although i'm still seriously engorged and sore.

Sad I'm so sorry. Even though your supply might decrease I think the milk takes ages to dry up when they're this age so maybe you could keep going just with a couple of feeds a day once she's feeling better?

Horrid to be sad about breastfeeding and have the hormones too. I hope she gets better soon. Smile

Thanks Gunpowder Smile
