EBF 5-wk old still hungry after being sick - should I feed again?

My 5-wk old has been EBF since birth. We've had a hard time with bfeeding but seem to be on the right track now.

His feeds are fairly irregular but he's gaining weight very well and is a very content baby. He seems to have trouble getting up wind so we've just started with Infacol.

He's been bringing back up approx one feed every 2-3 days for the past week or two, and has just thrown up his last feed (which I was reluctant to give him as he'd only fed about 1.5hrs before, but I thought he might be cluster-feeding). It doesn't seem to have bothered him but after cleaning him up and hanging him he's rooting away - hands in mouth and nutting me in the shoulders - and I know I won't be able to get I'm to sleep.

Is it crazy to let him feed again, though, so soon after chundering his last one all over me?!

I think I would feed him again and then maybe just try keeping him upright-ish for a while after you've fed. Have you spoken to anyone in RL?

ElBombero · 09/10/2013 23:19

Yes I'd feed again wind probably made him regurg so his little tummy will need filling back up x

My LO is the same (7 weeks and sick every couple of days). At first throwing up seemed to tire her out and she'd go to sleep but now she seems hungry again after a few minutes. I've been feeding her whenever she seems to want it and so far I've not had a 'double-vomit' incident. Good luck!

I think I would feed again then keep upright for 10/15 minutes, enjoy the cuddles and hopefully a few hours of sleep that will follow!

Hey Laquila, just wondering if you are giving your littlun the chance to burp mid feed? If they are regularly bringing up lots maybe a couple of mid point back rubs to bring up wind would help? Just a thought....

Thank you very much everyone for your advice, and apologies for the delay in responding!

We always try to wind him after one breast (sometimes he'll have the other one too but more often not) but he doesn't seem to bring up wind very easily - I think the Infacol is helping but not sure. We burp him either over my shoulder or propped up on my lap, so he's always upright for a good 10 mins after a feed

Woody I think he'd doze off if I tried to burp him before he'd finished one breast! Feeding generally seems to make him sleepy.

After I posted the above I fed him again a couple of times through the night and he seemed fine...then brought the whole lot up around 9am yesterday morning! It seemed more curdled than previously, when it's often looked like pure milk.

Gunpowder we've had a support worker come out to our house a few times and have seen two LCs at a support group - one of them diagnosed moderate tongue tie but I haven't made up my mind whether to have it snipped or not yet. We had a LOT of breeding problems to begin with - he couldn't open his little mouth wide enough to get a good deep latch (and still struggles) and I had terrible bleeding, sore nipples, and had to express for a few days and bottle-feed to let them recover. It's now less painful, but still definitely uncomfortable, and his latch on what used to be the good boob is getting worse, and he keeps slipping off, bless him. I think we'll go and see the person who does the tongue tie correction and see what they think.

Thanks very much again for your help.

You have my sympathies. Tongue ties are the worst! Personally getting DD's snipped was the best £200 I have ever spent, (long wait on NHS) but I know it's not for everyone and that it's not always a miracle cure.

I was a bit uncomfortable rather than in loads of pain before the tie but the revision revolutionised our feeding. DD never possetted a lot but seemed much less windy and more content after her tie was divided and it was much more comfy for me.

Thanks Gunpowder! Called our nearest NHS TT division clinic yesterday and the wait is 6 weeks! I'll be looking into getting to done privately ASAP...do you mind me asking whether you're anywhere near Cheshire/Staffs, by any chance, and if so where did you go?

Sorry, I'm in London! Mawbroon has posted a link before to these guys in Huddersfield if that's easier. I will PM the MNetters I've discussed TT with before to see if they have local reccomendations.
