i am pregnant with first baby. have had a slipped disc last year and so am keen to use anything that will help my back when breast feeding, but are these chairs worth the money?

Definitely
DH bought me one as a Christmas present when I was pgregnant with DS1 I sat in it all the time when I was pregnant (have a footstool that goes with it), fed DS1 in it, sat in again for another 9 months while preg with DS2 and fed him in it. He has only just stopped being rocked to sleep in it (he's nearly 3!)
I was a bit anxious about the cost but, tbh, it's the most comfortable chair we have in our house.

They are v comfy but I was put off as you can't wash the covers on most of them

go to a decent furniture shop that sells good chairs, sit in a few of the single ones to see how comfortable they are. buy and install in baby's nursery. you can always use it in the living room etc, after you are finished using it as a bf chair. that's what I am doing.

i agree that gliders are huge, ugly and expensive - but if your back needs one...

Nah. Learn to feed lying down and you can sleep at the same time

Definitely get some sort of comfy chair even if not a glider. I didn't and now I am bfeeding ds in his room at 18 months we have to lie on the floor as there is no other bed in there and he is too heavy to hold on the uncomfortable seat in there. I used to use the sofa in the living room for ages or my bed but he won't wind down in either of those anymore. Also it is nice to have a comfy seat to cuddle up on for story reading when they are a bit bigger.

I would love one! I was put off them by the look and size of them but the hospital I was in second time around had them in a feeding room and they were so comfortable and supportive. This was post-c-section too so it must have been good.

I would really like one but I'm not sure I can warrant the expense with number 3.

those cheapy Ikea armchairs are meant to be pretty good, and they now do a more expensive version with choice of removable washable cover (the Alme ones are the cheapest).

IMO no. I got one when pg with no1. It was supremely comfortable when heavily pregnant, but was very awkward for feeding. Possibly because I'm tall (5'8"), but the arms were too low to give me any support when holding the baby, the back, while high, gave me no lumbar support (I too have lower back troubles) and the top sloped too far back to support my neck and be able to rest my head during night feeds. The seat was too high for feeding, but the footstool was too high for me to raise my legs on with a baby or child in my lap. I used to end up feeding with a thin cushion at the back, a neck-bone cushion at the top, a very fat pillow under one arm and on my lap, and a small pouffe under my feet.

I didn't use it more than once or twice with my second child - decided it wasn't worth the faff.

But it was brilliant for relaxing in when heavily pg, and for storytime with baby or toddler on lap.

The best thing I found for feeding with back issues was to feed lieing down on my side with a pillow between my knees.

I can wash the covers on mine!
(good thing really )

SpaceCadet · 28/06/2006 18:22

ive got one from dd, lovely hauk one in beige with the footstoll, trouble is, now that dd is 2, its just a general purpose chair that gets in the way!

UniSarah · 28/06/2006 19:53

Not tried a glider BUT my Ds has already got so long ( at 16wks) that feeding in a chair with arms is a pain as he trys to bang his head on the arm on one side or pushes off with his feet from the other.

Racers · 28/06/2006 19:56

I loved mine but as it was in the nursery and not our room (not enough space), it was hardly used. It would have been perfect had it been in our bedroom as I found it hard to get comfy for night feeds (didn't bed-share very often). I got mine from Glasgow Pram Centre - approx. £150 for the chair and £50 for the stool.
